'The Sun That Increases Merit', an Explanation of the Meaning of 'Mirror of Results', from the Teachings of the Lord of the Three Realms, Dharma King Phakpa Rinpoche Namo Guru Buddha Dhvajaye Homage to the Guru Buddha Banner). To the Sakya lineage, sovereign of the teachings in Jambudvipa, Whose immaculate activity spreads in all directions, Possessing deeds unmatched by any other, I prostrate to the feet of glorious Phakpa. To elucidate the supreme teachings of that master of the three realms, The treatise called 'Mirror of Results', This explanation, 'The Sun That Increases Merit', Is promulgated here to generate joy in the wise. Here, in explaining 'The Sun That Increases Merit', an explanation of the meaning of 'Mirror of Results' from the immaculate teachings of the Lord of the Three Realms, Protector of Beings, Dharma King Phakpa Rinpoche, there are three general topics: entering the composition, the meaning of the introduction; the subject to be composed, the meaning of the main text; and the completion of the composition, the meaning of the conclusion. First, entering the composition is divided into two: homage and the pledge to compose. First, the homage is shown by: Called 'Mirror of Results', I prostrate to the guru and Manjushri. Whose karmic results and dependent origination, Are seen by himself as they are, And who, with compassion, as they are, Shows them to beings, I prostrate to him. That is the homage. Next, the pledge to compose is shown by: If one does not know, The distinctions of karma and its fruit, One will be confused about what to accept and reject, Therefore, I will explain this here to clarify it. That is the pledge. Thus, the two parts of entering the composition are finished. Next, the meaning of the main text, the subject to be composed, is contained in twenty-one topics, namely: identifying the distinctions of karma and its results; explaining how the three types of karma—virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral—produce the three types of results—happiness, suffering, and neutral; and identifying the ten non-virtuous actions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explaining its results: Revealing how these non-virtuous deeds, influenced by the three poisons, lead to falling into the three lower realms. Explaining that if a practitioner entering the Mahayana path is motivated by a pure intention, even actions that appear non-virtuous can transform into virtuous deeds. Explaining how to identify the ten virtuous actions. Explaining its results: Revealing that even if these ten virtuous actions are slightly mixed with the three poisons, they can still generate bodies in the three higher realms. Revealing that the three poisons of tantric practitioners, etc., if seized by skillful means, can become the cause of enlightenment. Explaining the way to act completely virtuously. Explaining how its common results arise. Explaining how the uncommon results of completely virtuous actions arise. Explaining how to identify impure giving, etc. Revealing how the thoughts at the moment of death, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, influence the projecting and completing karma, leading to various different results. Revealing that both projecting and completing karma resulting from negative actions lead to suffering, both resulting from positive actions lead to happiness, a mixture of positive and negative projecting and completing karma leads to mixed results, and how the difference in the quality of projecting karma leads to the ripening of results sooner or later. Revealing that whether virtuous or non-virtuous, accumulating a strong force of cause will inevitably lead to experiencing the result, but the power of conditions can lead to uncertainty in the speed, etc. Explaining that pure intention and action generate the result of happiness, and evil intention and action generate the result of suffering, which is the nature of reality. To understand this, it is explained with examples. Revealing that the power of land, objects, and thoughts is extremely strong and cannot be reversed by anyone, and that one must strive to counteract these forces. Explaining the benefits of understanding the system of karma and its results through examples. Revealing that even if slightly stained by sin, one should immediately confess, and even for a small amount of virtue, one should expand it through dedication and aspiration, etc., so that the supreme siddhi (accomplishment) can be easily achieved through the distinction of skillful means. Revealing that understanding the dependent arising of cause and effect in the conventional sense can generate the realization of the non-elaborate nature of reality. Explaining that thoroughly understanding the dependent arising of cause and effect is the basis for pure view and conduct, and therefore is taught as a guide for all those who desire liberation, summarized into twenty-one points. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
