The Response of Translator Khon Lui Wangpo. The Response of Translator Khon Lui Wangpo. From the Great Perfection Command, the Lama Hevajra Wheel: The Response of Translator Khon Lui Wangpo. Homage to Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava. I, the translator Khon Lui Wangpo, offered a precious mandala to the Guru Padmasambhava of Oddiyana, prostrated and circumambulated, and asked this in the meditation cave of Chimphu Bregu Gewu: "Guru Rinpoche, from where do we, the sentient beings of the three realms, come?" The Guru replied, "Son, translator, all sentient beings of the three realms come from ignorance." The translator asked the Guru, "Then, what is the nature of that ignorance, the basis from which the sentient beings of the three realms arise?" The Guru said, "The basis from which all sentient beings arise, called ignorance, is of various kinds, but the root is not recognizing oneself by oneself." The translator asked the Guru, "What is not recognizing oneself by oneself?" The Guru said, "Not recognizing oneself by oneself is not knowing the self-born awareness, the essence of all Buddhas of the three times, and only acting in the delusion of karma and afflictions." The translator asked the Guru, "Is that so-called self-born awareness one's own mind?" The Guru said, "Self-born refers to one's own mind, but awareness refers to seeing its essence." The translator asked the Guru, "If the essence of mind is called self-born, what is it like?" The Guru said, "One's own mind is without birth, without cessation, and without abiding, therefore it is called self-born." The translator asked the Guru, "If this own mind is separate from the three—birth, cessation, and abiding—then what is it that arises and abides from beginningless time, and acts without end?" The Guru said, "That arises only from the delusion of ignorance, and the essence of self-awareness is separate from all birth and cessation. Although it acts uninterruptedly in the three—birth, cessation, and abiding—from beginningless time to endless time, its essence is free from the nature of acting and being acted upon, therefore it has never caused any benefit or harm, like mercury falling into an ash pit."

Even if it falls into it, just as the essence of silver is not tainted by the obscuration of dust, he said. The translator asked the teacher: So, is seeing that kind of meaning called awareness? The teacher said: That kind of meaning, for awareness, is the great awareness of non-awareness, the unsurpassed other shore. The translator asked the teacher: So, what is the use of this awareness? The teacher said: There is no greater use for this awareness than that. Once you see the sovereign lord of all samsara and nirvana, the source of all existence and peace, just as when the trunk of a large tree is cut down, no matter how lush the branches and leaves are, they will fall along with it, samsara is reversed, existence and peace are overturned, and you can obtain what is called unsurpassed bodhi. The translator asked the teacher: Just by seeing that meaning, can one obtain unsurpassed bodhi? The teacher said: Through that unsurpassed great bodhi, one can obtain it. For example, when a person goes to the Golden Island, they will unhesitatingly abandon the mud and stones and enjoy the gold. In this way, those who are fortunate enough to see this will see the dharmas of samsara and nirvana as children's games, recognize the delusion of appearance and mind, and thus practice abiding in the meaning of the true nature of reality. The translator asked the teacher: So, for this meaning that is inherently present within oneself, are there beings who do not see it? The teacher said: Although it is inherently accompanied by oneself, those who can see its face are rarer than the stars in the daytime. Those who truly see its face and realize its meaning are these three kayas of Buddha. The translator asked the teacher: So, is it that these three kayas of Buddha only achieved Buddhahood by seeing this meaning? The teacher said: The Dharmakaya Buddhas, due to this primordially pure, free from elaboration, naturally appearing, beyond thought, without effort, emptiness view, naturally accomplish the Dharmakaya; the Sambhogakaya Buddhas, attain enlightenment merely through symbols; the Nirmanakaya Buddhas, recognize that this samsara is an impermanent aggregate body, a city of suffering, and truly
