The Preliminary Practice Notes of the Great Compassionate One Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance The Preliminary Practice Notes of the Great Compassionate One Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance Preliminary Practice Notes of the Noble Great Compassionate One Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance. Homage to the Lama and Protector Chenrezig. Furthermore, regarding the method of practicing the outer and inner preliminary stages, firstly, generate the mind that in order to establish all sentient beings equal to the sky in the state of complete Buddhahood, one should practice such profound instructions. Then, thinking about the difficulty of obtaining one's own body, thinking from the perspective of objects: From the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand (Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra): "Hell beings, pretas, animals, long-lived gods, barbarians, those with wrong views, those without Buddhas, and the mute - these are the eight unfree states." From this, liberation from the eight unfavorable conditions and the ten endowments are: "Born as a human, born in the central lands, with complete faculties, not acting against the Dharma, having faith in the teachings, possessing self-endowments, the Teacher has come, the Dharma is taught, the teachings remain, following after with love for beings, possessing other-endowments." As it is said, this body possessing the eighteen freedoms and endowments is obtained this time as a result of accumulating merit in the past, otherwise it will not be easy to obtain again, so one must quickly strive for the sake of the sacred Dharma and make it meaningful. Thinking from the perspective of examples: Shantideva said: "Like a yoke with a hole in the great ocean, and a turtle meeting it, it is even more difficult to obtain human form from the lower realms. If you obtain human form, make it meaningful, and do not let this life be in vain." Also, thinking from the perspective of numbers: Hell beings are like dust particles of the great earth, pretas are like the sands of the Ganges River, animals are like the yeast of beer mash, asuras are like blizzards, gods and humans are like dust particles on fingernails, and a human body endowed with Dharma is said to be even rarer than stars in the daytime. Therefore, if one does not quickly strive with strong diligence, life will be exhausted in a state of laziness, putting things off until tomorrow, and one does not know when one will die, one should think like this. Moreover, not only oneself, but also the outer vessel of the three thousand worlds is composed of the five elements, and the inner sentient beings, from the highest gods Brahma and Indra, etc., and the human wheel-turning kings, the great kings, small kingdoms, ministers, consorts, those with great power and fame, the middle ones to householders, etc.

Enemies, friends, and those in between, similar to the wealthy and affluent; the small, weaker than oneself, the deaf, mute, blind, beggars, and so on. Likewise, all beings of the six realms ultimately face untimely death. Even the Three Jewels, the objects of veneration including the gods, must demonstrate the nature of impermanence and passing into sorrowless Nirvana. Therefore, one should cultivate this very nature of impermanence within oneself, without being narrow-minded, and meditate on it constantly. In this regard, one must strive to adopt what is to be practiced, which is engaging in virtue and abandoning evil. The cause to be cultivated, the ten virtues, are: saving the lives of others, giving generously, and upholding moral discipline, which are the virtues of the body. Speaking truthfully, reconciling disputes, speaking gently and truthfully, and speaking meaningfully are the four virtues of speech. Having few desires and being content, the Bodhicitta that benefits sentient beings, and cultivating faith, pure perception, and skills are the three virtues of the mind. Among these ten virtues, the lesser ones lead to rebirth as ordinary beings and demi-gods; the intermediate ones lead to a life of leisure and spiritual opportunity; and the greater ones lead to rebirth as gods. These contaminated virtues, if connected with the Three Jewels, become the cause for temporary rebirth in higher realms and ultimately the cause for attaining enlightenment. If one diligently practices the yoga of generation and completion stage meditation and recitation, one will attain Buddhahood in this life, in the intermediate state, or at the latest within seven lifetimes. This is the special characteristic of the skillful means of the Secret Mantra. The cause to be abandoned, the ten non-virtues, are: killing, taking what is not given, and engaging in impure conduct, which are the three non-virtues of the body. Lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter are the four non-virtues of speech. Covetousness, malice, and wrong views are the three non-virtues of the mind. Thus, the ten non-virtues, if performed with a great and complete foundation, intention, action, and culmination, lead to hell; the intermediate ones lead to the preta realm; and the lesser ones lead to the animal realm. If one only performs actions mixed with virtue and non-virtue, even if reborn as a human, one will only have the nature of unpleasant environment and beings. In short, non-virtue brings suffering, and virtue brings happiness, just as planting a certain seed will cause a certain sprout to grow. It will not be wasted even after hundreds of eons and will follow one like a body and its shadow. Likewise, the result of virtuous causes, happiness, is temporarily like the visible happiness and wealth of gods and humans; and ultimately, the happiness of Buddhahood is only found in the blissful realm of Sukhavati.
