The Quintessential Instructions, the Treasure Chest of Accomplishments. The Quintessential Instructions, the Treasure Chest of Accomplishments. From the Great Compassionate One, Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance: The Quintessential Instructions, the Treasure Chest of Accomplishments. Homage to the Lord of the Lineage, the Great Compassionate One. This Quintessential Instructions, the Treasure Chest of Accomplishments, from the Great Compassionate One, Dispelling the Darkness of Ignorance, has three meanings: preliminaries, main practice, and conclusion. First, the preliminaries have thirteen aspects: the qualities of the teacher and student; second, requesting teachings; third, preparing the place and implements; fourth, examining the planets and stars; fifth, performing the ground ritual; sixth, subduing the Matrams; seventh, drawing the mandala; eighth, preparing the student; ninth, setting outer boundaries; tenth, restoring deficiencies; eleventh, arranging ornaments; twelfth, setting up offerings; thirteenth, arranging the samaya substances and bestowing blessings. Samaya. Gya, gya, gya. First, the qualities of the teacher are twofold: relying on those with qualities and abandoning those with faults. Among them, the teacher who possesses qualities and is worthy of reliance is one who: possesses the hearing of all vehicles and has attained warmth in the generation and completion stages; is not attached to things and possesses confidence in the nature of reality; is greatly compassionate and skilled in means; has a pure lineage and is skilled in mandala activities. Such a teacher is called the holder of the lineage of all the Buddhas of the three times, and one should rely on them correctly, without regard for body or life. Second, abandoning those with faults is: having weak hearing and contemplation and little compassion; having great pride and strong jealousy; not possessing the warmth of the generation and completion stages and having a strong attachment to the eight worldly concerns; being arrogant and having inferior views. Such a person is a demon to the student and should be completely abandoned. The qualities of the student are also twofold: without faults and with faults. First, without faults is: having great faith and clear intelligence; being patient and possessing diligence; having foresight and faith in the Great Vehicle; not being attached to this life and keeping the next life in mind; a person of devotion and respect without partiality or selectivity is a suitable vessel for explaining the profound and authentic instructions. Second, with faults is: being dull-witted, impatient, and of harsh disposition; being gossipy, lustful, and prone to change; being eloquent but unskilled, short-sighted; faith, diligence, wisdom,

Je Chung! Delighting in talk of profit and fame in this life, turning one's back on study, reflection, and Dharma. This is like impure mire, like poison that ruins, so keep far away from it. Second, the requesting of teachings: Then, in whatever direction a qualified teacher resides, a disciple with faith and respect should request, "Please bestow upon us profound and extensive instructions, easy to understand and easy to practice, concise in words but profound in meaning." Request this months and years in advance, and if even a slight promise is given, invite the teacher to the place. Serve with abundant and pleasing service, and without losing even a word of the teachings, supplicate with one-pointed devotion for the empowerment, transmission, and pith instructions of the profound Dharma that is desired, and with diligence, receive the authentic pith instructions. Third, preparing the place and materials: A place that is auspicious and delightful, where a river flows from the direction of power, with a good mountain behind it, free from the harm of wild people and wolves, a place blessed by previous masters, or a place where white-sided local deities reside. As for materials, all the necessities for the Vajra King and his retinue, medicines for illness, the wealth of Ghana, precious mandalas, and so on, should be gathered without anything lacking. Fourth, examining the planets and stars: It is good to engage in empowerment, instruction, Dharma practice, etc., on days such as the Pisces sign, empty sky days, the eighth and tenth days of the lunar month, as they will increase a hundred thousand times. As for planets, it is good to engage in empowerment and Dharma practice when the five planets—Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, and Saturn—are favorable, as one's wishes will be fulfilled. Merit increases and excellent qualities and siddhis are attained on days such as Nakshatra, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, and Shravana. The season should be like late summer or early autumn, or the time when flowers bloom in spring, or in short, a time when the elements are balanced is crucial. Fifth, performing the ground ritual: Take earth from a place that is red in color and shaped like a crescent moon. Furthermore, the earth deity is called "The Devourer," and whichever direction it faces, it uses the moon as a pillow. When circling the palace, it looks west and north for the three months of spring, north and east for the three months of summer, east and south for the three months of autumn, and south and west for the three months of winter. After observing this, take earth from its belly. Furthermore, the earth for each of the four activities: The main thing is one's own tradition, and especially the earth for pacifying is white and soft, the earth for increasing is yellow and oily, the earth for magnetizing is red and
