An Examination of the Meaning of the Innate Luminous Mind: Wisdom Illuminating the Distinction Between Ground, Path, and Fruit in the Great Perfection. An Examination of the Meaning of the Innate Luminous Mind: Wisdom Illuminating the Distinction Between Ground, Path, and Fruit in the Great Perfection. Nidhidhimalasyārthaṃ bitto atimahāmūlabandhiphalānāṃ bibhedabhāprajñānāmabiharatisma. This is the treatise called "An Examination of the Meaning of the Innate Luminous Mind: Wisdom Illuminating the Distinction Between Ground, Path, and Fruit in the Great Perfection." Namo Guru Manjushri Jñanasattvaya. The primordially pure, innate vajra mind, the self-luminous, uncompounded expanse, the all-pervading realm of self-aware awareness in samsara and nirvana, I have unwavering faith in the ultimate Great Perfection. To the assembly of Buddhas, their heirs, vidyadharas, and noble ones, I offer the supreme, peerless path from which they departed. Here, I elucidate the essential transmission and pith instructions, the supreme secret treasury of the wisdom mind as they are. Thus, the ultimate point of all the sutra and tantra teachings well-spoken by the Buddhas is the spontaneously luminous innate mind, the co-emergent wisdom, the very nature of the Great Perfection. The primordial luminosity of the ground, the original state of being, is the ultimate nature of all phenomena. From within it, all appearances of samsara and nirvana arise and abide, and there is no other phenomenon apart from it. This is the place of liberation, and therefore the ultimate Dharmakaya of the absolute state of being. When the ultimate obscurations, adventitious habitual tendencies, are purified, it is the ultimate cessation of suffering in the Great Vehicle. The ultimate place of liberation and the cessation of suffering in the Great Vehicle are the same in meaning. In it, delusion and liberation are non-dual, and it is the great nature of equality. It is primordially pure, free from any elaboration, and because it is not merely emptiness, it is clear and without distinction. Because it is free from limitation and partiality, it is self-arisen and spontaneously accomplished. Because it is the source of all appearances of samsara and nirvana, it is all-pervading compassion, and thus the absolute state of being. In terms of the purity of freedom from elaboration, it is the expanse. In terms of the clarity of its own radiance, it is self-arisen wisdom. In terms of the non-duality of expanse and wisdom, it is bodhicitta. Primordially pure, spontaneously accomplished, its essence is emptiness, its nature is clarity, and its compassion is all-pervading, thus possessing the three wisdoms. The innate mind, the ultimate bodhicitta, the self-luminous mind, the innate.

The maternal mind, the vajra of mind, the all-pervading vajradhara of space, etc., are merely different names for that self-originated wisdom, but in reality, there is no difference. From its state, the two, samsara and nirvana, arise: When not realized, in the time of samsara, not realizing the dharmata, with the appearance of grasper and grasped, in various dualities, it appears as phenomena, and unequally, appearing as self and other, good and bad, samsara, nirvana, and various others. At the time of realization, in the time with the name of nirvana or liberation, because of realizing the dharmata, realizing that all phenomena have not gone beyond it, although appearing in various forms, in the realm, in suchness, it becomes one taste, equality, and when realizing that there are no characteristics of duality, everything appears from the beginning as self-liberated buddha-nature, without exceeding it. Therefore, if from the point of view of realizing the principle of dharmata, self-nature, and complete purity, all appearances are regarded as naturally enlightened and established, this is the reasoning of dharmata, so there is no confusion. Those with dualistic appearances are confused, so the appearance of confusion can never harm the statement that one is originally enlightened. Therefore, at the time of realizing the Great Perfection of the dharmata of mind, all phenomena appear as pure self-nature. Sentient beings grasp at the eight aggregates of consciousness, but do not know its dharmata. When yogis realize the wisdom of the dharmata of mind, they do not find even a particle of another mind other than that state, and all dharmas similarly appear as the play of pure wisdom, therefore, from the Guhyagarbha Tantra: "Other dharmas than the Buddha, the Buddha himself cannot find." This is the meaning of what is said. If viewed from the perspective of appearance, the ground itself has not yet matured into the result, and that which has not yet matured is not the dharmakaya itself, so it is thought that this present ground is merely the cause of the dharmakaya, and is not yet a buddha with the ten powers manifest, so the dharmakaya of the ground-time is not real. However, if viewed solely from the perspective of the original ground-time, there is no term for liberation or delusion, so it is neither sentient being nor buddha, because it is impossible to have already realized or already been deluded. From that, when the ground-appearance arises, although there are two paths of liberation and delusion from this ground-appearance, liberation is to realize the ground as it is.
