Explanation of Chapter Eighteen. Explanation of Chapter Eighteen. Here concludes the Explanation of Chapter Eighteen. Namo Gurave (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思). In this root chapter, among the three paths that necessarily arise for the self-result of the three vehicles to be meditated upon, here is the Unsurpassed Yoga. Within that, there are two, the generation stage and the completion stage, and here the completion stage is taught, which is the profound essence of all tantras. Before meditating, one must understand the nature of reality. Although there are many established orders of philosophical schools, here the definitive essence that agrees with the key points of all sutras and tantras is solely the non-duality of the two truths. That is the uncommon sphere of activity of the Buddhas, therefore it is secret. It is the source of all dharmas, therefore it is a treasury. To establish that, first establish the basis of the non-duality of truth, then cultivate the path of the non-duality of samsara and nirvana, and finally superimpose the non-duality of the basis and result to be attained. The first of the three, the nature of reality named the non-duality of truth, what is its nature? It is the primordially luminous wisdom or the essence of the Sugata. The name luminosity, like the absence of darkness and the presence of light, signifies the name of being unstained by obscurations and possessing the knowing aspect of wisdom, therefore it is called wisdom free from obscurations. This is shown from the aspect of knowing awareness. Also, from beginningless time or from the very beginning, it does not abide in any extreme, therefore it is utterly peaceful, that is, the nature of non-proliferation. Or it abides in its own nature. This shows the aspect of emptiness. The example of the two, awareness and emptiness, is like the luminous essence of the sun and the unobstructed sky. Because the knowing aspect is spontaneously accomplished and the nature is unconditioned. Such a sphere of the union of awareness and emptiness is naturally pure, not depending on activities such as the path. That is because it is untouched by both the conditioned samsara and the fault of pacification, which is on the side of the unconditioned, therefore it is greatly pure. Since it has always abided in such a state, in essence, appearance and emptiness are individually inseparable, there is neither nirvana to be truly established, nor samsara to be truly eliminated. Due to its power, faults go away and qualities come.

There is also not. In that case, the activity of conventional words and concepts does not occur there, so the elaboration of the conventional is completely cut off. Samsara, nirvana, appearance, emptiness, faults, virtues, etc., everything that is measured by words and concepts is conventional because it cannot be established by examination, and all its activities are pacified. Therefore, since it transcends the scope of distinguishing "this is conventional" and "this is ultimate," it is like saying, "The appearance that arises from the mind of philosophical tenets is conventional, and what abides without arising is ultimate." Since even the two truths that are established and clung to are not established, it transcends them, and all elaborations such as grasping at existence and non-existence are pacified. The reason for this is that in the nature of reality, the two truths are inseparable, so it cannot be said that it is established in the conventional or not established in the ultimate. The key is that they cannot be separated. In conclusion: Thus, in the realm of phenomena, the nature of appearance and emptiness is non-dual and cannot be made into two. Therefore, the truth of the conventional and the ultimate is also inseparable, and this is merely expressed in words and terms. Even if the realm is like that, if we rely on the way things appear and distinguish them separately in terms of mere names, then, like this, all the phenomena that are gathered by illusion and appear under the influence of the conceptual mind of grasping at a subject and an object, which belong to the dharma of samsara, are untrue, wavering, and impermanent when examined. Therefore, the dharma that has the nature of deceiving is the conventional truth. Because it is difficult to realize and profound, all elaborations are pacified, and the wisdom of knowledge is clear and radiant, and all suffering is abandoned, the dharmas that are gathered by the great nirvana are beyond the phenomena of particles and moments. Therefore, it is free from the vibration of change and has an unchanging nature, and it is considered the ultimate truth. This way of establishing the conventional and the ultimate is established by the way things appear and the way they abide, that is, it is established on the appearance aspect and the emptiness aspect, which is the same and equal in both samsara and nirvana. Here, the way of establishing the ultimate and the conventional is that the way of abiding and the way of appearing are consistent and inconsistent. In this way, there are two great traditions, which also appear frequently in the sutras, so do not confuse them with each other. The latter way of establishing is to measure right and wrong with the valid cognition of nominal reasoning.
