Just as it is said that the mind is captivated by scenery, those who possess great compassion captivate (beings') minds with great compassion. Some whose wisdom has not been well tamed, who are born among the last five hundred people afflicted by the times. When they examine the scriptures of the Tathagata, which are unerring, unadulterated, immaculate, and difficult to understand, they do not apply the words as they are spoken, nor do they examine the nature of the meaning as it is. Like gold and a lamp in a dark room, because they do not understand the order of meaning and words, they cling only to the words. Even if they cannot fathom the profound realm, they only enter according to the strength of their own wisdom, and so on, being deluded by various views of their own desires. Swept away by the flood of ignorance, they are thus deprived of the essence of the Tathagata's words, the yoga of proper attention to the scriptures of definite meaning, which are like nectar. This is the dedication of the merit of composing the twelfth general meaning to Bodhi: For that reason, may this supreme path spoken by the Buddhas, the secret of the hearts of the Buddhas, be fully realized as it is, which is the uncommon object of the Buddhas' minds, even though I, Manjushri Mitra, cannot know it. However, this true secret meaning, by the power of the teacher's own long-accustomed practice, having been thoroughly proven from the measures of reason in a way that does not contradict the scriptures and oral instructions. For the benefit of beings, to proclaim the non-duality, that is, the supreme path of the non-dual Bodhicitta, the footprints of the Buddhas of the three times, clearly elucidated, this brief summary, may all beings in all states of birth in samsara, even for a moment, not be diminished by factors contrary to right thought, and may all beings realize the essence of the meaning contained in the hearts of all the Buddhas, and may it increase in their continuums. This is the aspiration made (by the author). The words are easy to understand. Profound and vast is the treasury of the Victorious Ones' Dharma, The very essence of its heart, the effortless path of the Vehicle. The Great Perfection that liberates the sharp-witted in one lifetime, This footprint of a hundred million Vidyadharas is wondrous. Enlightened in the equality of all dharmas, The supreme nature of the All-Creating Bodhicitta. Unmistakenly clarifying, the definitive meaning's scripture, This alone is the secret treasury of all the Buddhas' minds. Therefore, the quintessence of the Vidyadhara lineage's oral instructions, Whatever connects with it, the nourishment of rest in the primordial kingdom. Even at the end of time, the undiminished stream of activity, To propagate it, the noble intention rivals the splendor of the autumn moon. Even so, with my ignorant questions, The good treatises of the noble and wise, the parts of confusion, Whatever there may be, together with the sins of lifetimes, If confessed, may it purify and grant the accomplishment of a cleansing bath. By the virtue of striving here, may the supreme Vehicle, the Great Perfection, Its stainless system greatly flourish to the end of existence, May myself and others, in all lives, enter this supreme path, May we be protected by the truth of the noble path and the nature of reality! Thus, this commentary on "Meditating on Bodhicitta: Alchemy," called "The Lamp Illuminating Suchness," is from the handwriting of the omniscient Lama Rinpoche Mipham Jamyang Namgyal. The monk Jamyang Lodro Gyatso, who touched the feet of that very master with his head, copied it in the Earth Sheep year at Dzogchen Monastery's Dechen Padma Oling retreat, and the master Khenchen Kunzang Palden, the powerful speaker of scripture and reasoning, proofread and well established it. The scribe was Lodro Salwe, who is accomplished in understanding and realization. May this also cause the teachings of the supreme Vehicle, the Great Perfection, to remain for a long time! Mangalam!
