Commentary on Cultivating Bodhicitta, Refining Gold from Ore, The Lamp Illuminating Suchness. Commentary on Cultivating Bodhicitta, Refining Gold from Ore, The Lamp Illuminating Suchness. This is the treatise called Commentary on Cultivating Bodhicitta, Refining Gold from Ore, The Lamp Illuminating Suchness. Namo Guru Manjushriye. Knowledge and the knowable are of equal taste. The sphere of inseparable union, the vajra of luminous mind. I prostrate with the hand gesture of abandoning gathering and scattering. Here, in explaining this treatise, Cultivating Bodhicitta, Refining Gold from Ore, the essence of the general Mind Section of the Great Perfection, composed by the great accomplished master, Acharya Manjushrimitra, there are three parts: the beginning, the main body, and the conclusion. The first part has two sections: the meaning of the title and the translation homage. The first is: In Sanskrit: Bodhicitta Bhavanopala Suvarna Druta. In Tibetan: The essence of the ultimate truth, the nature of bodhicitta, the spontaneously perfect Great Perfection, establishing without reversing the meaning, and the oral instructions on how to cultivate it, like a treatise where the essence of gold resides in ore, and a skilled blacksmith refines it into pure gold through skillful means, relating the example to the meaning. The second is: Homage to the noble one who has transcended the stage of childhood, who is gentle by pacifying the suffering of elaboration, whose body possesses the glory of the two benefits, and who has become youthful by being free from aging and decay. This is the translation homage made by the translator. In some texts, it also appears as: Homage to the Bhagavan, the completely pure one of the three realms. The second part, the actual meaning of the text, has twelve sections: Approaching the composition with homage to the Three Jewels as a preliminary. Why should one realize? What should one realize? By what means does one realize? Upon what does one rely to realize? The meaning ascertained after examination. Cultivating the ascertained meaning. The method of realizing the ascertained meaning through the method of transmission. The faults of not being embraced by bodhicitta. The benefits of merely generating faith in this. Showing those who have gone astray as objects of compassion. Dedicating the merit to enlightenment. The first part is: Realizing without error the two selflessnesses of person and phenomena is the mind of the Sugata.

It is the wisdom of discernment. By attaining it, one attains the wisdom body that is inseparable from the realm of objects of knowledge, which is the Buddha Jewel. The nature of all phenomena, the Dharmadhatu, which encompasses all purity, is the pacification of all elaborations and characteristics. There is no removal of faults or acceptance of qualities in this. By realizing it in this way, one dwells in equanimity in acceptance and rejection, which is the supreme path among paths, the Truth of Cessation and Path, the Dharma Jewel. By directly realizing selflessness, one does not completely turn back from samsara, such as the first ground, the Joyful Ground, and the eighth ground, not turning back from characteristics, etc. The princes who dwell on the ten grounds, having attained the ten powers such as faith, all the Buddhas and the Dharmadhatu, from the perspective of realization, attain the same field of activity, which is the Bodhisattva Arya Sangha. Thus, the knowable Dharma, the knowing Buddha and Sangha, that is, the teacher, the teachings, and the place of learning, these three, from the perspective of conventional truth, are jointly taken refuge in through the establishment of connection. From the perspective of ultimate truth, without distinguishing them as different entities, they become equality. To this, with a mind free from clinging to characteristics, with extremely pure faith, one ascertains the meaning as it is, and prostrates with conviction. The second general meaning, why should one realize it, is divided into two: benefits and greatness. The first is divided into three: the benefit of being the cause, the benefit of the manifest result, and the benefit of showing the supreme of all liberation results. The first is: the teachers of gods and humans, etc., become the lamp of wisdom that dispels the darkness of the outer and inner worlds of all beings, praised by all with one intention and one voice, which is the Bodhicitta. How is it? If one realizes that among all knowable phenomena, the Bodhicitta, which is originally present in all phenomena and becomes the ultimate essence of Dharma, that is, the peace without the pain of elaboration, then it becomes the adornment of sentient beings, the youth free from faults and stains, the essence that is supreme among knowable phenomena. Thus, realizing without error the nature of Bodhicitta, ultimate meaning, and Manjushri Youth, is the mother from which all the Sugatas of the three times are born, that is, the Prajnaparamita, because there is no other way to attain Buddhahood other than this, so it is the only path of all the Buddhas.
