Commentary on the Twenty Verses Commentary on the Twenty Verses Here begins the Commentary on the Twenty Verses. In Sanskrit: Vimśatikākārikā. In Tibetan: Twenty Verses. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! In the Mahāyāna, the three realms are established as being only mind. As it says in the sūtra: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, know this: these three realms are only mind." Mind, intellect, consciousness, and discernment are different names. Mind is understood as including that which is associated with it. The word "only" negates external objects. Therefore, the appearances of the three realms are merely appearances of one's own consciousness. The meaning is that the apprehended and the apprehender are not different, because of the appearance. For example, those with cataracts see non-existent things such as hairs and double moons. An objection to this: If it is only consciousness and there are no external objects, why do appearances of things like pots occur in some places and not always at other times? And the minds of those present at that place and time would not be indeterminate. For those with cataracts, the appearance of hairs and cities does not perform those actions, and it is unreasonable to perform the actions of real hairs. That is to say, the determination that appearances are sometimes fixed in place and time, and that the mind is also fixed, and that hairs, cities of gandharvas, and dream foods do not perform those actions, while hairs, cities, and foods do, is unreasonable, because if there are no external objects, there would be no difference in the appearance in consciousness. This is the debate. To this, the occasional certainty of place, time, and mind is established. For example, in a dream, cities, men, women, gardens, etc., appear, but not everything appears. Similarly, the appearances of place and time are occasional, and not everything appears at all times, so it is like a dream. The mind is not necessarily determined by the place, like a hungry ghost. Just as all those with similar karma see a clear river as pus, urine, flames, etc. Actions are not determined by the autonomy of the place, just as in a dream, two

Even if the sperm and ovum do not meet, it is like the harm of producing semen. All appearances are karmic appearances, such as hell beings. They see the hell guardians, dogs, crows, iron mountains, etc., and those guardians actually harm those beings. If someone asks, are the hell guardians, dogs, crows, etc., real beings? The answer is unreasonable, because they do not experience suffering. If they are harmed by the burning iron ground, etc., how can they torment others? They are not hell beings who experience the suffering of hell, but are called hell guardians. If that is the case, then are animals who are reborn in the heavens not animals? If they are animals, then should the hell guardians also be classified as pretas or birds, etc.? How can animals be reborn in the heavens? Similarly, they do not arise in hell. The hell guardians are not pretas either, why? Because they do not experience the suffering in hell. If the karma of the hell beings causes burning iron ground, hot water, etc., to appear there, and they want to transform in other ways, that is also possible. Why not think that the maturation of karma causes the transformation of appearances, rather than thinking that it is an external reality? The animals in the heavens are born there through the karma that allows them to experience the happiness of the container world, and they experience the happiness there. The hell guardians are caused by the karma of the hell beings, for example, huge mountains like sheep come and go, or like forests of iron sal trees, thorns appear pointing up or down, this is merely what is manifested by karma. If one thinks that external things exist independently of the mind, then thinking about the causes and changes of things will produce karmic habits. And its result is considered to be an external reality. In the mindstream, wherever there are habits of appearance and the change of appearance, why not think that the result there is the transformation of consciousness? This is allowed in the scriptures. If someone says, because the Buddha said that the sense bases of form, etc., exist. Then, the Buddha said that the sense bases of form, etc., exist in order to subdue those who like external things by this method.
