Turning away from the delusion of ignorance, if one realizes that things are impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self, then one will not be deluded about things. Without delusion, there will be no attachment. Without attachment, there will be no hatred. Without hatred, there will be no action. Without action, there will be no taking of things. Without taking, there will be no manifest accumulation of existence. Without existence, there will be no birth. Without birth, there will be no suffering in body and mind. Thus, here, because these five causes are not accumulated, the result will not arise elsewhere, and this is called liberation. Thus, the nature of suffering, the cause of samsara, wandering through afflictions from the origin of suffering, the wheel of existence is stopped by the single path of emptiness, and the fruit of liberation is attained by the path of reversing from convention. From the perspective of universal affliction and purification, there are two pairs of cause and effect, which are taught by the Four Noble Truths. The sixth is taught from the perspective of extremely subtle things to complete liberation. Thus, all phenomena are things that arise from causes and conditions, and all these things are extremely subtle and difficult to examine. Therefore, it is said, "extremely subtle things." Or, the word 'not only' implies that clinging to things as existent in this way not only becomes a fault, but also summarizes the statement. Whichever individual discriminates or observes with annihilationism, that is, the view that there is no future life, and without understanding the profound appearance of dependent arising, sees nothing in ultimate reality like a rabbit's horn, that unskilled person does not see the reason that things arise from conditions and that the result will not reverse unless the conditions cease. Or, even for extremely subtle things, such as dust particles and moments, one first discriminates that a truly established thing is born and exists, and ultimately ceases and is annihilated, because things arise from conditions. One does not see the meaning that there is no arising from anywhere in the beginning and no cessation in the end, and that there is no coming and going. If one sees the meaning of arising from conditions, there will be no annihilation. Thus, if one sees the meaning of dependent arising, one will understand that things are empty, not established by their own nature, and that the key to dependent arising and the key to emptiness are not contradictory.

Moreover, by going together as friends, one will gain firm conviction and enter into the wisdom that does not differentiate between appearance and emptiness. Thus, by teaching the path that is free from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, all wrong views are eliminated. Therefore, when examining the nature or essence of things with immaculate wisdom, since the object of focus is not found, there is nothing to be eliminated as an inherently existent phenomenon of complete affliction, and there is no object of focus that needs to be re-established or can be cut off as a pure phenomenon. So, how is liberation from existence achieved? As previously explained, if this cycle of existence is established merely by delusion or ignorance, then by hearing and contemplating the immaculate true view, cutting off exaggerations and diminutions, one ascertains the meaning. And in accordance with this, one should observe with immaculate correct knowledge. If one sees the meaning of the true view, one is liberated. Lord Maitreya said: Therefore, liberation is merely the exhaustion of error. Thus it is said. The third is: The Essence of Dependent Arising in Verse. Completed by the noble teacher Nagarjuna. The ending is easy to understand. Thus, based on Nagarjuna's own commentary on the Essence of Dependent Arising, without relying on Samata, whatever appeared was recorded in writing, this is his own handwriting. By means of the excellent path that leads to victory, the Dharma of Dependent Arising that you yourself teach to others, by relying on it and analyzing it with pure wisdom, may the merit of this lead to unobstructed wisdom regarding all that is to be known, up to the essence of enlightenment, and to the strength of faith in the Buddha and the Dharma. May we have the good fortune to directly realize the meaning of the profound and unsurpassed Dependent Arising. In order to repay the kindness of the beneficent protectors, may we always and everywhere in the boundless pure lands, liberate all beings with the words that teach the profound Dependent Arising. May the great force of the wind of virtue generated by this effort, merge the white light of Manjushri, as straight as the moon, into the great reservoir of water in the heart, may I become the glory of protecting all beings. With this aspiration, aiming at the seed of increasing wisdom, motivated by the mind of benefiting others, may it be pleasing to the ear.

Having curtailed the prolixity of words, at the age of twenty-six, on the third day of the royal month of the Iron Sheep year of the Rabjung (Tibetan calendar cycle), this was written in one outer session by the scholar Lodrö Drime (Blo gros dri med), also known as Jampal Gyepai Rangdang Tsojung Zhepai Gesar ( 'Jam dpal dgyes pa'i rang mdangs mtsho byung bzhad pa'i ge sar), the speaker of the five sciences. May all obstacles to the practice of Dharma for oneself and others be completely pacified without remainder, may the rays of light of Manjushri's delight always permeate the heart, and may all aspirations be fulfilled. Auspicious! The essence of dependent origination.
