The Essence of Dependent Arising. The Essence of Dependent Arising. The Essence of Dependent Arising Resides Here. In Sanskrit: Pratītyasamutpādahṛdayakārikā. In Tibetan: The Verse Summary of the Essence of Dependent Arising. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī. What are the twelve distinct limbs? Those dependent arisings spoken by the Sage, are completely included in these three: afflictions, actions, and suffering. The first, eighth, and ninth are afflictions, the second and tenth are actions, the remaining seven are also suffering. The twelve dharmas are included in three. From these three, two arise, from two, seven arise, and from seven also, three arise; that wheel of existence, itself revolves again and again. All beings are cause and effect, in this there is no sentient being whatsoever. From dharmas that are only emptiness, only dharmas of emptiness arise. The dharmas of no self and no mine, spit, flame, mirror, illusion, crystal, seed, transformation, and sound. The aggregation of rebirth is also, understood by the wise as not transmigrating. Even with regard to extremely subtle things, whoever conceptually analyzes their cessation, that one who is unskilled, does not see the meaning arising from conditions. In this, there is nothing to be eliminated, there is nothing to be established. Look correctly at reality itself, if you see correctly, you are liberated. The Verse Summary of the Essence of Dependent Arising, composed by the noble teacher Nāgārjuna, is complete. Maṅgalaṃ! The Commentary on the Verse Summary of the Essence of Dependent Arising, Called Profound Seeing. Namo Guru Padma Mañjuśrī Vajra Tīkṣāya. In all the realms of existence where boundaries are invisible, beings closely bound by the net of dependent arising, this path of liberation, the great ascetic, is not found in other worlds, including Brahmā. Therefore, from the heart, with reverence, the one who teaches, the incomparable one and his followers, I prostrate with my head to the path of his teachings, the unsurpassed one, I will clarify. Therein, dependent arising is the essence of all the teachings of the Victorious Śākya Siṃha, the teacher Nāga said: This dependent arising is the Victorious One's,

Like the profound essence of a treasure trove, whoever truly sees this, sees the supreme aspect of the wisdom of that Buddha. Thus, it is said in accordance with the meaning of the Sutra teachings of the Buddha himself. In this way, explaining the meaning of the teachings on dependent origination, the Victorious One (Buddha) prophesied that it would be the author who clarifies the unsurpassed vehicle. The immaculate words of the glorious protector Nāgārjuna, "The Essence of Dependent Origination in Verse," are explained in three parts: the initial meaning, the main meaning, and the concluding meaning. The first part contains the title and the translation homage. First, the title: In Sanskrit: Pratītyasamutpāda-hṛdaya-kārikā. In Tibetan: The Essence of Dependent Origination in Verse. Combining the two: Pratītyasamutpāda, dependent origination; hṛdaya, essence; kārikā, verse. Its meaning is: Like extracting butter from milk, the Victorious One spoke of extremely many sutras on dependent origination, but all their meanings are gathered here, and their profound essence is exhausted, hence it is the essence. This is because of the reason of gathering the vast and understanding the profound. Such meaning is expressed in verse form, hence it is called a verse. The second part is: Homage to the youthful prince who is gentle, free from the coarse touch of afflictions, and endowed with the glorious perfection of the two wisdoms, having exhausted the two obscurations. This is the translation homage made by the translator. The second part is: In general, dependent origination is much discussed in all the Victorious One's teachings and in the Rice Seedling Sutra and others. In general, all the Buddha's teachings, whether of the Great or Small Vehicle, must be bound by the bond of the Four Noble Truths, because all the teachings spoken by the Buddha are unified in cutting the root of samsara and leading to nirvana, and each of these internally contains the two, cause and effect, as a fixed number. Therefore, at the beginning of the Buddha's teachings, the Four Noble Truths, which are the foundation of all sacred Dharma, are explained. This is the unsurpassed nature of knowing by what means to turn away from samsara. Thinking thus: From what cause does this samsara, which is of the nature of suffering, arise? And from this samsara, by what means can one be liberated? At this time, the outsiders
