The Great Emptiness of the Tathagatagarbha: The Lion's Roar. The Great Emptiness of the Tathagatagarbha: The Lion's Roar. The Great Emptiness of the Tathagatagarbha: The Lion's Roar abides. Namo Gurave. The very nature of mind, primordially stainless, is the essence of the definitive meaning, the heroic Manjushri. With the sharp edge of the sword of definitive reasoning, it utterly severs the net of samsara, the ignorance of all. Here, the essence of the speech of all the Buddhas who have gone to the three times, the heart of their intention, the single key point of all the teachings of Sutra and Tantra, is none other than this all-pervading Tathagatagarbha. This principle is so profound that even the great masters of the ten bhumis find it difficult to realize as it is, like a form in the night. What need is there to mention ordinary people? When the Teacher, the Sugata, spoke, sometimes he clarified the essence of the Tathagatagarbha by means of teaching emptiness. At other times, he clarified the nature of the Tathagatagarbha from the aspect of teaching that qualities such as strength are primordially present. Although it is necessary to combine these two without contradiction, because of not having faith in the profound key point of the inseparability of the two truths, some see the Tathagatagarbha as permanent, not empty in essence. Others grasp only emptiness and remain in the realm of nihilistic slander, where the qualities of body and wisdom cannot be placed as inseparably primordially present. Although they proclaim various arguments of affirmation and negation, hoping to establish their own views, like the roaring of the ocean, those fortunate ones who are blessed by the oral instructions of the Lama, like the essence of nectar seeping into their hearts, have faith in the meaning of the union of emptiness and luminous wisdom, without contradiction, and those who abide in peace, free from clinging to either appearance or emptiness, speak thus. In general, the words of the Tathagata are a valid authority, a true statement that does not deceive. However, in order to determine that it is not deceptive, it must be purified by three examinations in order to determine that it is a pure statement. In general, and especially for the meaning expressed by the literal meaning of that text, it is necessary to take the definitive meaning if there is no harm from reason and there is a correct proof. If one abandons the reason that purifies the sacred word,

It is not enough to merely believe what is said, because in general, there are correct and seemingly correct scriptures, and even among the correct scriptures, there are those that need interpretation and those that do not, which is undeniable. Therefore, ordinary beings, having severed their attachments through hearing and thinking, will develop irreversible trust in those places they enter that can be ascertained by the three valid cognitions; otherwise, if they cannot ascertain it through their own valid cognition, nor can they prove it in the face of opponents, it is like a flesh-eating demon vainly asserting that there is a flesh-eating demon in this place before him, and such words cannot inspire trust in oneself or others. Therefore, speaking in accordance with correct reasoning is the way of wise people, and if it is established by reason, the tongue of the opponent will naturally become short, and attachment and joy in one's own position will arise irreversibly. If the path cannot be established by reason, no matter how much it is adorned with many words, the multitude of disputes will increase like the water in a reed thicket. Here, entering the tradition of the victorious ones and great bodhisattvas, which has not been disturbed by logic, abandoning sectarian bias, and measuring those presentations of the Tathagatagarbha with an impartial mind, one will find that the view that the Tathagatagarbha is inherently non-empty, truly established, and eternal, and the view that it is a nihilistic emptiness devoid of qualities, both lack reasons for establishment and one sees harms; while for the Tathagatagarbha, whose essence is emptiness and whose nature is primordially endowed with qualities, existing in the realm of sentient beings, one sees that there are no harms and that there are correct reasons for establishment. Among these, first, what is the reason for establishing that the element of the Tathagatagarbha exists in the continuum of sentient beings? The Great Vehicle Sutra Ornament says: "The body of the perfectly enlightened one, because it radiates, and because the suchness is undifferentiated, and because of having the lineage, all sentient beings constantly possess the Buddha-nature." Regarding the meaning of what is said, to determine it with reason, there are two aspects: stating the views of others and correctly establishing one's own views. First, the early Tibetan scholars explained "the body of the perfectly enlightened one radiates" as the wisdom Dharmakaya pervading all places, explained "the suchness is undifferentiated" as merely being the same as emptiness, and explained "having the lineage" as merely being able to become a Buddha, and therefore did not grasp the essence of this treatise of the Sutra Ornament.
