Being apart from the four extremes of being one and not being one is being apart from all elaborations. It is believed that dharma and dharmata are inseparable, the two truths are inseparable, and each should be realized by one's own wisdom. Such dharmata, being apart from elaborations, is always equal because it is apart from arising, ceasing, decreasing, and increasing. Therefore, there is not even a trace of the characteristics of the two dharmas such as purity and impurity. Moreover, this school of the Mind-Only asserts that all dharmas are merely appearances of the mind, and there is nothing else besides that. They believe that the basis of appearance, the clear and knowing nature of the other-dependent consciousness, is merely substantially existent. If we pursue the ultimate intention of this view, they believe that this knowing is merely substantially existent as the cause of the appearance of all terms, but not as substantially existent in the ultimate truth. If they do not believe this, then there is no contradiction with the Madhyamaka school. If they believe that it is truly established in the ultimate truth, then it contradicts the Madhyamaka school. It seems that one should measure whether it contradicts the Madhyamaka based on this difference. Any sentient being, first, when believing in and practicing the treatises of the Five Treatises of Maitreya and the Extensive Conduct School of Asanga, first recognizes that all dharmas are only mind. Then, they experience that the mind has no object of focus, and then, because there is no object of focus, there is no grasper. At the time of the peak of the path of application, after realization, they directly realize the truth of dharmata that is apart from the grasper and the grasped, thereby attaining the first ground. Moreover, regarding the reason for being Mind-Only, they also believe that the alaya-vijnana, which is the cause of the appearance of the grasper and the grasped that appear as the place, things, and body, is substantially existent in name, but even if it is not established as two, it will appear in various ways, therefore it is like illusion and so on. Therefore, it is very easy for this school to understand that the wisdom of the two emptinesses does not have truly established self-nature and characteristics. Therefore, it should be considered that the ultimate intentions of the two great chariots of Madhyamaka and Mind-Only are consistent. So, why did the Madhyamaka masters refute the tenets of the Mind-Only school? This is because those who proclaim the tenets of Mind-Only and have arrogant minds say in the context of Mind-Only that there is no external object and the mind is substantially existent, just as a rope is empty of a snake but not empty of a rope. They did not understand that this is just a way of acknowledging within the scope of terms,

It refutes the tenet that the ālaya-vijñāna is truly established in the ultimate truth. It is said that it does not prevent the intention of the noble Asanga, who realized the Cittamatra path taught by the Buddha as it is. There is nothing unreasonable in saying so, because if the wise men of the snowy land believe that even the Śrāvaka who have seen the truth realize both selflessnesses and are no different from the Madhyamikas, then what need is there to mention that the great chariot Asanga realized the intention of the Madhyamaka? Because he is a noble being. In general, it is sufficient for the Madhyamikas to establish that all phenomena are dependently originated and empty of inherent existence, and it is not necessary to accept the tenets of Cittamatra. However, dependent origination is also divided into two types: dependent origination that distinguishes self-nature and dependent origination that distinguishes between pleasant and unpleasant. The first is to explain how all appearances arise from the ālaya-vijñāna, so this subtle inner dependent origination is to be realized by the Bodhisattva who is skilled in the subtle and profound meaning. The noble Asanga said in the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* and other texts that the gross outer twelve dependent origination, which distinguishes between pleasant and unpleasant, is more profound than the former. Similarly, in the definitive sūtras and the profound tantras, it is also said that there is no dharma other than mind, and that the root of both saṃsāra and nirvāṇa lies in the mind. If there is no mind, there will be no dharmas of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, because the function of the mind is that, through afflictions, it creates karma, thereby accomplishing the side of contaminated saṃsāra; through generating wisdom and compassion that realize the selflessness of persons, it cultivates the Mahāyāna path, thereby transforming the eight consciousnesses, including the ālaya-vijñāna, into the Buddha with the nature of the five wisdoms; the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas also cultivate the nirvāṇa of entering into quiescence through the mind that realizes the selflessness of persons. Therefore, the root of all good and evil depends on the mind, which all Buddhists must acknowledge. Moreover, if it is established that the mind is without inherent existence, one can realize the Mahāyāna path with little effort, which is the key point of the path, as stated in the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra*. And the Indian
