Because all vehicles rely on its merits, it becomes the refuge and protector of the three kinds of fortunate ones. Those fortunate ones each rely on or are satisfied with their own vehicle. The classification or entry of taking refuge is twofold: obtaining through expression and obtaining through the nature of reality. The first is when one makes a verbal commitment and obtains it through the expression of the sounds of the khenpos and acharyas, etc., which is the coarse taking refuge that arises from expression. Obtaining through the nature of reality is when, on the first bhumi, from the moment of directly realizing the meaning of the nature of reality, one obtains that which will never degenerate thereafter, which is called the profound or subtle obtaining through the nature of reality. The arising of bodhicitta is also twofold in the same way. Thus, the taking refuge of the wise bodhisattvas who possess the nature or essence, cause and effect, and the six entries, is superior to that of the shravakas and pratyekabuddhas who are worldly and beyond worldly. Third, the concluding verses. As explained above, entering into refuge in the manner of the Mahayana path is of great significance. How so? Thus, in order to accomplish the two benefits of self and others, having gone for refuge, by gradually cultivating the bhumis and paths, until obtaining the qualities of the Buddha's bhumi, such as the ten powers, four fearlessnesses, and spontaneously accomplished and continuous activity, etc., the accumulation of immeasurable qualities will increase, which is the perfection of self-benefit. For the benefit of others, with a mind of compassion pervading all limitless beings, with incomparable means, also showing and upholding the Dharma of the great noble Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—the Mahayana—expanding in the ten directions, thereby establishing beings in temporary and ultimate happiness and liberation, therefore possessing the perfection of intention and action. In the Ornament of the Mahayana Sutras, the third chapter, the explanation of taking refuge, is complete. Third, the chapter on taking refuge.
