Chapter Three: The Chapter on Taking Refuge. Chapter Three: The Chapter on Taking Refuge. Having diligently practiced the Mahayana in this way, in order to understand the specific differences between the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, although there are many ways to distinguish them, here we explain the four differences from taking refuge to practicing, in order to understand that from taking refuge, which is the initial entry point of the cause, lineage, and path, all thoughts and actions are integrated with differences. Secondly, in order to understand the specifics, there are four: taking refuge, lineage, generating bodhicitta, and practice. In the first of these, there are two: the distinctions and the nature of taking refuge that possesses those distinctions, summarizing their meaning. In the first, there are two: a brief explanation of the four distinctions, and a detailed explanation of their meaning. First, "Universally going" and so on, two verses, that is, the refuge of the Mahayana practitioners is superior due to four distinctions: universally going by engaging in liberating all sentient beings, and promising to attain Buddhahood itself, realizing the two selflessnesses, and subduing worldly beings and Hearers and Solitary Realizers, that is, by the distinction of the four aspects of the nature of differentiation, for the sake or purpose of the meaning or manner of the supreme vehicle, whoever goes for refuge to the Three Jewels is superior to those who go for refuge to worldly beings such as Brahma and Ishvara, and the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who go for refuge to the Three Jewels for their own benefit. Because individual ordinary beings first vow and pray that they will definitely attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment in order to liberate all sentient beings from samsara and place them in the state of liberation and omniscience, this is a difficult thing to do, because even among many sentient beings, it is extremely rare to make such a wish to generate bodhicitta. Having generated such a mind, the practice of giving away one's body and possessions, etc., in order to attain unsurpassed enlightenment and completely liberate sentient beings, is difficult to accomplish even in many thousands of eons. Because once unsurpassed enlightenment, Buddhahood, is achieved, it benefits all sentient beings until the end of samsara, so it is of great significance. Therefore, taking this Great Vehicle as the path and showing refuge is endowed with supreme meaning.

In the extensive explanation, there are four in the order mentioned above. The distinction of "universal conduct" is the four types of universal conduct in order: sentient beings, vehicles, wisdom, and nirvana. Whoever has embarked on liberating all limitless sentient beings, and fully realizes the three vehicles, and is skilled in universally applying the wisdom that realizes the two selflessnesses, and whoever realizes the realm of nirvana, where samsara and peace are of one taste, and with wisdom and compassion does not abide on the extremes of existence and peace, is nirvana or knowable universal conduct. Such a wise person should be understood as universal conduct in this context, as the Hearers do not possess these qualities. Regarding "commitment," there are two types: substantial and illustrative. First, whoever rejoices from the depths of their heart in the Buddha's qualities, powers, fearlessnesses, etc., and pursues supreme enlightenment with great enthusiasm, this is the distinction of aspiration and prayer. Whoever, from the stage of faith and practice up to the ten bhumis, is tireless in practicing the path, giving up their body etc., enduring suffering etc., and truly engages in ascetic practices, this is the distinction of practice. Whoever, upon fully attaining Buddhahood, has no difference from all Buddhas in terms of abandonment and realization, and whose body, speech, and mind become equal, this is the distinction of the result. Such a wise person should be known as the most supreme commitment or vow. Second, illustrating its qualities with examples, there are two examples: the example of a king's son and the example of a great minister. First, the supreme birth of the Buddha's lineage is illustrated by the example of a Chakravartin king's son. For example, a Chakravartin king's son possesses the four perfections: the father's seed, a queen of noble lineage as the mother, a womb free from defects such as illness, and a wet nurse to nurture him. Similarly, Bodhisattvas are called the lineage sons who do not cut off the lineage of the Thus-Gone Ones, while Hearers are not called sons of the Buddha, but disciples born from the Buddha's speech. Whoever, among Bodhisattvas, is born as the most supreme son of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, has generated the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment, and has the perfection of wisdom that realizes selflessness, and possesses the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, and has the compassion that does not abandon all sentient beings, these four qualities are in order.
