How can one attain enlightenment? Why is it that wisdom that understands the profound meaning of no arising and no cessation leads to liberation? The thought that logicians who analyze with direct perception and inference cannot be liberated is a reason to fear the Great Vehicle, which is unreasonable. If liberation could be attained merely by fully understanding phenomena through direct perception and inference, then all sentient beings should have been liberated long ago. But this is not the case, because attachment to phenomena binds, and only by knowing that phenomena are without inherent existence can liberation be reasonably attained. Therefore, childish logicians who take their own intelligence as the standard and abandon the profound meaning of the Dharma seen by the great sages are like frogs in a well, or like the blind competing with the sighted. They are extremely foolish, because they use their own non-valid intelligence as evidence to refute valid cognition. In this way, if someone likes inferior thoughts, and their faculties or nature are also extremely inferior, and they are surrounded by inferior companions who hate the Great Vehicle, then if they have no faith in this Dharma that correctly explains the profound and vast meaning, this itself proves the excellence of this Dharma, because it is not the domain of the inferior, so the wise know that it is an uncommon Dharma. After hearing, if one gains a little intelligence to distinguish between what is reasonable and unreasonable, then instead of contemplating the profound meaning that one did not previously understand, it is unreasonable to denigrate other things one has heard that have not been examined by the Great Vehicle. Why? Because you yourself have not understood the various inconceivable intentions of the Great Vehicle, and much remains unknown. How can you, in your ignorance, determine whether this is reasonable or unreasonable, whether it is Dharma or not? Because without truly understanding the meaning, one cannot determine the difference between what should be accepted and what should be rejected. The sutras say that if one takes the meaning of formlessness, soundlessness, etc., as it is expressed in words, and thinks that one has fully understood or comprehended it, then misunderstanding the intention of the sutras in this way will lead to arrogance, thinking, "I understand the meaning of that word." Because one has not correctly understood the meaning, intelligence will decline, and relying on this, one will also abandon other well-spoken teachings, and thus one will destroy oneself.

Why is that? Because generating anger towards the profound Dharma will accumulate severe obscurations. The reason for this is that the fault of anger in the mind is inherently malicious. Unlike the actions of body and speech, which can be altered by motivation, it is a fault in its very essence. Therefore, one should not be angry even at unpleasant or harmful things, or unreasonable objects like burnt pieces of wood. As it says in the Sutra of Soglé in the Hearers' Canon: "Monks, even towards a burnt piece of wood, you should not generate a mind of anger, what need is there to mention a body with consciousness?" Since this is the case, it goes without saying that one should not be angry at a Dharma about which one is uncertain whether it is correct or not. If one abandons the true Mahayana Dharma, one will repeatedly transmigrate through countless kalpas of formation and destruction in numerous world realms, and experience extremely unbearable suffering in hell, as the Bhagavan has said. Therefore, those who wish for their own well-being should not criticize any Dharma that they have not understood with anger and contempt, even if they have not developed faith in it. It is best to remain neutral, because in doing so, one will not incur any faults. This is the detailed explanation of the meaning of the second chapter, the chapter on practicing the Mahayana, from the Ornament of the Mahayana Sutras. The Second Chapter: Explaining in Detail the Practice of the Mahayana Teachings.
