Like cities and villages, and mountains, rocks, islands, and islets, let the syllable HŪṂ go to all places, and in some places, think of it staying for a while and recite the long HŪṂ. Sometimes, think of the HŪṂ going as fast as an arrow and recite the short HŪṂ. Sometimes, gather it back and place it near you, or on your pillow, or in your heart. The necessity of this is to bring the three doors of body, speech, and mind onto the path. Thus, when reciting HŪṂ, combine wind and awareness into one. By placing it wherever you direct it, ordinary conceptual thoughts will naturally subside. The third preliminary of the mind is: In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: Where does the mind first arise from? Where does it abide in the middle? And where does it go in the end? If you examine these three, you will tame the mind and know the nature of the mind. Thus it is said. Wandering in samsara and experiencing suffering, and attaining Buddhahood and experiencing happiness, seem to be all about this mind of ours. If we do not correctly understand its true nature, then we will still have to wander endlessly in samsara. Now, no matter what, we must generate the thought of realizing the true state, and in that state, whatever sudden conceptual thoughts arise, immediately seize them with mindfulness and look at their nature or essence: Where did it first come from? Externally, from where did Mount Meru, plants, forests, etc., the realms of the four elements, and the conditions of cities and parents, etc., arise? Internally, from where did the beginning, end, inner, outer, and middle of one's own body arise? Discriminate. In addition, look at appearance and emptiness, etc. Where it abides in the middle, also, externally and internally as before, investigate where it abides, etc. Even if it abides in one's heart, investigate which part of the heart it abides in, the tip, root, flesh, fat, blood, or skin. Also, carefully observe where it ultimately goes. If you investigate to the end, look at what kind of investigator is there. If you cannot investigate, then look at its essence. Also investigate its own essence, recognition, shape, and color, etc., and try to gain an unwavering certainty that is not inverted: Where did it first arise from? Where does it abide in the middle? Where does it ultimately go? Look at the essence, recognition, shape, and color. If it is empty and nothing, or what is it like? If you gain a certain understanding without deception about this, then you should introduce it: Your own mind is not initially produced by causes and conditions.

There is no place to say that it comes from here because of arising. It is not that it is not found even when searched for in that way, because it is originally rootless, and its essence is emptiness, so there is no place to speak of arising. There is no place to abide in the middle, because there is no place to stay and no place to rely on here, so it is the nature of the essence of emptiness. If there were a place to stay, there would have to be form, shape, and color. For example, the nature of the sky does not abide anywhere. In the end, there is no place or trace of going here or not going here, because the nature of emptiness is free from the later limits. For example, the clouds in the sky dissipate, or the waves of the river subside. Understanding in this way can eliminate the flaws of delusion, understand the nature of the mind, know the essence of awareness, thoroughly understand reality, and gain confidence from within. That is, if you stare at the essence of the mind, there is no distinction between the seer, the seen, and the way of seeing. The seer and the seeker are also the mind, and the seen and the object of seeing are also the mind. Therefore, even if one essence is separated, there is no distinction, it is one. Like this, until you have gained confidence in yourself, you should investigate, so as to gain unwavering conviction and cut off imputations. That is, realizing that the place of origin, dwelling, and going of the mind, the essence, characteristics, shape, color, etc., are all emptiness in which nothing is established, is to see the face of (Tibetan: བུདྡྷ་དྷརྨ་ཀཱ་ཡ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: बुद्धधर्मकाय, Sanskrit Romanization: Buddhadharmakāya, Chinese literal meaning: Buddha Dharma Body), to thoroughly understand the nature, and to recognize the flaws of reality. So, would you think that emptiness is nothing at all? It is not like that. Even when it is empty and clear, there is a clear, naked, and bright clarity, which is to see the face of the Buddha's complete enjoyment body, see the essence of the mind, recognize the key points of reality, and recognize the nature of the essence. Like that, while it is clear, it is also empty. The essence of emptiness is clarity, and the nature is inseparable. In that state, the appearances of the six aggregates appear in various ways, and even when they appear, it is realized that there is no slight movement from the essence, which is to see the face of (Tibetan: བུདྡྷ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུའི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: बुद्धनिर्माणकाय, Sanskrit Romanization: Buddhanirmāṇakāya, Chinese literal meaning: Buddha Transformation Body), is to know the nature of delusion, and to manifest the meaning of the great union. The first of these is called essence, the second is called nature, and the third is called great compassion. The mind is delusion and discrimination.
