Profound Path, Gathering All Sugatas: A Guide to Tummo, The Lamp Illuminating the Profound Essence. Translator: Lotsawa Dharma Shri. A Guide to the Tummo of the Profound Path, Gathering All Sugatas, called "The Lamp Illuminating the Profound Essence." Translator: Lotsawa Dharma Shri. Om Swasti. A Guide to the Eleven Profound Keys of the Tummo of the Profound Path, Gathering All Sugatas, called "The Lamp Illuminating the Profound Essence." I respectfully bow to the feet of the glorious and blissful Master, the embodiment of the Lord of Dance. Supreme, unchanging, stainless, great bliss. May the three secrets of all Buddhas be awakened as vajra. I prostrate to the feet of the kind Guru. Grant the blessings of innate bliss, the Yidam. Here, for fortunate disciples who have received secret empowerment and trust in their vows, who desire to attain the supreme siddhi of Mahamudra in this very life, one should practice the profound path of Tummo, a marvelous method for quickly transforming disturbing emotions into the path. This has three parts: preliminaries, main practice, and subsequent stages. The first also has two parts: general and specific. The first, the general preliminary, is as it is said: "First, purify the mindstream with preliminaries." Therefore, the preliminaries of the session and the cultivation of renunciation should precede. From refuge and bodhicitta to Guru Yoga, the preliminaries that make the vessel suitable for the path should be done according to the root instructions. The second, the specific preliminary, is: anoint and bathe the body, abandon fatigue and exertion, cut off the stream of idle talk and know it as sound-emptiness, cut off the stream of mental proliferation and engage in the practice of samadhi. The order of this is: In the special preliminaries, practice the protective circle, accumulate merit, and purify. Thus, there are three: meditating on the protective circle, accumulating merit and making up for deficiencies, and performing the three purifications. The first is: "On a comfortable seat, with the key points of the body," etc., as taught. On a comfortable seat, the key points of the body are: legs in vajra posture, hands in fists covering the knees, spine straight, upper body erect, neck bent, tip of the tongue touching the palate, eyes gazing straight ahead. The key point of the mind is to dissolve this ordinary body like a rainbow disappearing into the sky, and from non-objectification, in an instant, one's own body, the outer form of great compassion.

Focus your mind on visualizing the body as illuminated by the form of Pema Karpo, the embodiment of all Sugatas, with its interior empty, clear, transparent, and unobstructed. When it is clear, visualize a red vajra radiating light on the full moon disc in your heart, standing upright. Having cleared the stale air, as you exhale, visualize countless tiny vajras radiating light from the vajra in your heart, like dust motes in sunlight, emanating from your nostrils and filling the entire expanse of space. As you hold your breath, visualize all the vajras in space gathering together, forming a vajra ground and tent, utterly indestructible. As you inhale, visualize all the tiny vajras dwelling in the space within the tent entering through your nostrils, filling your body from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet without any gap, bound immovably by the minute particles of vajra, and hold the breath within. Secondly, accumulating merit and restoring deficiencies, etc.: In your own heart, on the sun disc, clearly visualize the essence as the Lama, and the form as the all-powerful, great compassionate one (Garwang Tukje Chenpo), about the size of a cubit. Having cleared the stale air, as you exhale, visualize a red and white vajra cross emerging from your heart, exiting from the nostril through which the breath flows, and resting in the sky a cubit above your head in a seated posture. As you hold your breath, visualize the Lama's form in your heart also emerging from your nostril, resting on the vajra cross, and generate intense devotion and reverence. As you inhale, visualize it entering from the nostril through which the breath does not flow, and arriving in your heart. As you hold your breath, visualize it dwelling on the sun-essence in your heart with a joyful and smiling expression, and remain with unwavering, wholehearted devotion and reverence. Thirdly, purification, which is divided into three: purification of the body, purification of the channels, and purification of the winds. The first is the purification of the body: The physical exercise is the Vairochana's seven-point posture, etc. Assume the seven-point posture of the body, clear the stale air, and hold the breath a few times. Then, concentrate the breath at the navel, tighten it forcefully, then let the lower air be natural while pressing down on the upper air, and coordinate this posture with the physical movements. First, clench your fists at your shoulders.
