Although demons do not enter, if they have entered, then, like today, awareness is scattered and confused, the mind is uneasy, drowsy, etc. If no people or objects arrive tomorrow, then know it is their doing, so meditate on the protection wheel. If it did not occur before but occurs later, it is an obscuration, so recite the Hundred Syllable Mantra many times. If those substances can be obtained, do not use them before the night has passed. In general, at the beginning of retreat, relax; in the middle, be diligent; and afterwards, relax. Whenever the thoughts of the three times, whether large or small, arise like ripples on water, seize them with sudden awareness, and in a state of non-distraction, focus the mind on the sound of the deity and mantra. If various experiences of pleasure and pain, high and low, arise, release them without attachment. After retreat, first meet with one or two people who keep their vows pure. Then gradually widen the circle, allowing obscurations and obstacles to gradually approach; this is important. Thus, by diligently practicing in accordance with the Dharma, one will become a great sovereign who is able to accomplish all the activities of the Vajrayana; this is certain. The dance of Manjushri Vajra Wisdom Illusion, becoming the fierce one who subdues the unbearable hordes of demons, the blood-drinking one and the mudras of samsara and nirvana, overwhelming all, O great glorious Lord of the Enemy of Time! His accomplishments are like a wish-fulfilling jewel, easily accomplished without difficulty, a gift of swift bliss. The mantra holders of the degenerate age, with great diligence, give the weary a gift of rest. May the merit and wisdom gained from this explanation of his treasure text, the root sadhana, and the many essential points of unerring instructions, be blended into the great ocean, becoming one taste. This is the practice manual called "The Excellent Vase of Fulfilling Wishes," for Manjushri Yamantaka, the subduer of arrogance. In order to make the long-standing request of my younger brother, the translator Ngawang Chöpel, meaningful, Gyalkhampa Gyurme Dorje composed it in the great palace of the Potala Mountain in Ü-Tsang (Central Tibet).
