How to take refuge. The first is: For the sake of cherishing life and seeking benefits, the Three Jewels should never be abandoned. This means that in the Vinaya Pitaka it says: For the sake of your life, your kingdom, and even for the sake of laughter, you should not abandon the Three Jewels. So it is said. The second is: No matter what calamities occur at this time, no other refuge is sought. This means that no matter what calamities occur, such as illness and suffering, one should rely on the Three Jewels and not seek other worldly methods. Then, for the rituals to treat illness, should one not recite mantras, read, or use medicine? Answer: There is no fault. Because those are branches of the Dharma Jewel, one should not slander them, but should strive to do them. The third is: With great qualities and pure food, constantly remember and make offerings. This means that there are two: constantly remembering the qualities, and making offerings with food. The first, among the Three Jewels, the qualities of the Buddha are: In the Sutra it says: Thus the Buddha, the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the well-gone, the knower of the world, the guide of beings to be tamed, the unsurpassed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan. So it is said. The qualities of the Dharma are: The Dharma of the Bhagavan is well-spoken, rightly seen, without disease, without time, guiding, seeing this is meaningful, the wise each realize it for themselves. So it is said. The qualities of the Sangha are: The Sangha of the Bhagavan's disciples is well-dwelling, uprightly dwelling, rationally dwelling, harmoniously dwelling, worthy of joining palms, and so on. Thus, through the door of remembrance, whatever one does, one should learn to serve the Three Jewels, and strive to prostrate to the Buddha in the direction one is going, and so on. The second is, constantly make offerings by remembering kindness, and even whatever one eats or drinks, one should learn to offer the essence. The fourth is, the constant refuge should be recited, Six times a day is constant encouragement. This means three times a day and three times a night through the door of remembering benefits.

One should take refuge, and make every effort to lead all relatives and attendants to take refuge as well. Sixth, the ritual for taking refuge: First, one should know what is to be taken. "Take from a pure place, if fear arises, it is an exhortation." Therefore, one must first take refuge from a pure place, that is, from a virtuous friend, so one prays to him. He should also promise to set up offerings in the presence of the objects of refuge, generate the thought of the actual Three Jewels in the object placed in front, and have him prostrate and make offerings, taking the request for permission as a guide, reciting: I, named so-and-so, from this time forth, until the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the Buddhas, and likewise take refuge in the Dharma and the Sangha of Bodhisattvas. Have him recite it three times. This is obtained from symbols, with conventional truth as the object, and is the refuge of cause. After that, the one who takes refuge, all the objects of refuge are the magic of one's own mind, the nature of the mind is not found anywhere, abiding in a state free from elaboration, understanding the meaning of unborn, this is the ultimate refuge, which is obtained by nature, the refuge of fruit without aspiration. Thus, it is also said in the Intermediate Mother Sutra: Subhuti, for whom there is no perception of the Buddha, nor thought of the Dharma and the Sangha, this is the true refuge. This is also first taken from a virtuous friend, and later, if fear arises and is exhorted, suddenly taking refuge, and taking refuge at six times, all of these are taken in front of the object thought of by one's own mind. Third, the meaning of the conclusion has four parts: stating the title of the work, entrusting it to the translator, dedicating the merit, and the completion of the final task. First: Although there are many things to be known in the lineage, since the king and ministers did not have faith, I have explained this ritual of refuge. Because the master is a great scholar of the five sciences, although there are many things to be known in his mind, here, in order to dispel the doubts of the king and ministers about who is the outer and inner pandita, for the time being, I have explained only this much. Second: The instruction is: Write well, Kumara. Therefore, it was entrusted to the great translator Nyak, and after he translated it well, he presented it to the king and ministers.

Therefore, doubts are dispelled. Third, with the words "Dedicate the merit to all beings," in order not to transcend the conduct of a Mahayana Bodhisattva, the virtue of the composition is dedicated to the benefit of others. Fourth, the statement "The six branches of refuge are complete" means that for the time being, it is complete with just this much, which is an inexpressible meaning. Thus, the first treatise composed in Tibet by the great Pandit Vimala, "The Six Branches of Refuge," explains the meaning of the text according to one's own ability, and was recorded as a memorandum during a collective Dharma teaching, by Dharma Shri. Auspicious!
