The Commentary on the Six-Limbed Refuge Transmission Notes by Lotsawa Dharma Shri. Herein lies the Commentary on the Six-Limbed Refuge Transmission Notes. Lotsawa Dharma Shri. Namo Ratna Trayaya (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音:namo ratna trayāya,汉语字面意思:Homage to the Triple Gem). The explanation of the Six-Limbed Refuge composed by the great scholar Vimalamitra, who was born in the western part of India, in Elephant Peak, has three parts: the introduction, the main body, and the conclusion. The first part includes the prostration and the pledge. The first is: I prostrate to the Three Jewels. In relation to this phrase, considering the four aspects, we seek: With what do we prostrate? To whom do we prostrate? In what manner do we prostrate? For what purpose do we prostrate? Firstly, with what do we prostrate? It is the beginning of the Great Scholar Vimala composing treatises in Tibet. To whom do we prostrate? In accordance with the subject matter of the text, it is to the Three Jewels. In what manner do we prostrate? With the respectful manner of the three doors (body, speech, and mind). For what purpose do we prostrate? It is for the sake of oneself conforming to virtuous conduct and for the sake of obtaining special benefits in the minds of oneself and others. The second part is: I will explain the Six-Limbed Refuge. Regarding this phrase as well, who explains? Vimala. What is explained? The nature and precepts of refuge. How is it explained? It is explained by wishing to gather it into the summary of the six limbs. Why is it explained? It is for the purpose of bringing the composition to completion. The second part includes: briefly indicating through the divisions of the topics and extensively explaining through clarifying the meaning of the words. The first part is: Why take refuge, the object, the time, the benefits, the precepts, and the taking of refuge, all are explained in the root summary. There are six aspects: the necessity of why to take refuge, the object to whom one takes refuge, the duration of time for taking refuge, the benefits of having taken refuge in this way, the precepts to be observed by the object in whom one has taken refuge, and the ritual of how to take refuge. Generally, the essence of refuge is: the mind that acknowledges reliance on a supreme object, along with its seeds. The meaning of the words is: Sharana Gacchami (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音:śaraṇa gacchāmi,汉语字面意思:I go for refuge). Because it protects, it is called "refuge." Because it relies on that and approaches it, it is called "going." The divisions are: mundane and supramundane. The first includes: mundane intellect and mundane object. The second includes: the Lesser Vehicle and the Greater Vehicle, thus there are four. In order to establish these, there are six aspects, the first of which is the necessity of why to take refuge.

Regarding the phrase, "Go by remembering fear and qualities." The cause of taking refuge is being threatened by fear. If one has no fear or dread and has attained independence, then there is no need to seek refuge in anyone. In order to be saved from fear, one goes by remembering the qualities that have the power to save. There are also three types of individuals: The lesser one, fearing the lower realms, desires the happiness and fruit of higher realms, and goes like a welcoming escort. The middling one, fearing samsara, desires peace for their own sake and goes. The great one, threatened by the fear of existence and peace, goes because they desire non-abiding nirvana. The first type is an individual whose main motivation is fear and desire, who does not enter a religious school, or if they do, they are merely members of outsiders or insiders. The second type is one who, on top of the first two causes, has faith as their main motivation, and is a follower of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The third type is one who, on top of the first three causes, has compassion as their main motivation, and is a follower of the Great Vehicle. As it says in the Lamp for the Path: "Whoever, by whatever means, only seeks their own benefit in the happiness of samsara, know that person to be the lowest. Turning their back on the happiness of existence, stopping sinful actions, only seeking their own peace, that is called a middling person. Whoever, compelled by their own suffering, wishes to completely exhaust all the suffering of other beings, that person is the highest." Secondly, the place to go for refuge is "that place where the three abodes are shown." Regarding the difference in places, there are two: worldly and beyond worldly. The first is divided into inferior and superior. The first is inanimate objects such as mountains and fortresses, as well as non-humans such as powerful gods, and powerful human beings such as kings. These cannot save from samsara, so they are worldly, because they themselves have not been freed from the prison of samsara. As it says in the sutra: "People frightened by fear mostly go for refuge to mountains, forests, and trees, but those are not supreme refuges, and relying on them will not free you from all fears." The second is the liberation from fear.
