Third, relying on the refuge, that is, the difference between internal and external refuge, the wise ones think so. Second, as it is said in the scriptures, the son of the gods will be born as a pig, and he can avoid it because he has taken refuge. As it is said in the "Jataka of the Pig": "Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, they will not fall into evil destinies." and so on. Third, taking refuge is the cause of precepts, which can strengthen the thought of Nirvana. As it is said in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "A layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels is the root of the eight precepts." Fourth, as it is said in the "Heart of the Sun Sutra": "Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, countless demons cannot harm him." Fifth, as it is said in the "Ornament of the Sutras": "All evil deeds, as well as old age and death, the Buddha can protect." Sixth, it can reduce and even eliminate the karmic obscurations accumulated in the past. Seventh, as it is said in the "Nirvana Sutra": "Whoever takes refuge in the Three Jewels, the excellent collection of merit and wisdom, because the victorious Dharma of the world increases, will surely attain the state of Buddhahood." In short, taking refuge in the Three Jewels can become the cause of ultimately attaining Buddhahood, turning the wheel of Dharma, and gathering the irreversible Sangha in sequence. Fifth, the precepts after taking refuge are divided into two: uncommon precepts and common precepts. The first is further divided into: the precepts of prohibition and practice. First, the initial precepts of the Three Refuges are: "Do not rely on Yakshas, do not prostrate, the second, all sentient beings, abandon harm and should be loving, the third, the realm of oneself and others, do not associate with sinners." It means that after taking refuge in the Buddha, one should not rely on worldly gods and take refuge, nor should one prostrate. However, there is no contradiction in making prostrations and offerings in order to temporarily seek some Dharma-abiding actions. After taking refuge in the Dharma, one should abandon harmful actions such as beating and binding sentient beings, and should be loving. After taking refuge in the Sangha, one should not befriend heretics, even if they claim to be Buddhists, but have no faith in the Three Jewels.

One should not associate with those who hold wrong views. As it is said in the Nirvana Sutra: Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha is a true layperson, and should never go for refuge to other gods. Going for refuge to the sacred Dharma means being free from the mind of harming and hurting. Going for refuge to the Sangha means not associating with non-Buddhists. Thus it is said. Secondly: One should view even a fragment of an image and a yellow patched robe as the teacher with devotion. One should not slander everything spoken by the Buddha, but should take it upon one's head. One should regard both pure and impure individuals as sacred. This means that even a small fragment of an image, a single verse of scripture, and even a small yellow patch sewn on the robes of the Sangha should be treated with respect, let alone anything else. Therefore, having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one should avoid disrespect and contempt for any kind of image, good or bad, and regard it as an object of veneration like the teacher. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Just as the image of the Sugata, even if made of wood, should be worshiped by the wise, no matter how it is made. Thus it is said. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one should avoid actions such as slandering all the scriptures, including the teachings and commentaries, and should treat them with respect. As it is said in the Ear Ornament: In the last five hundred years, I will dwell in the form of letters. Think of it as me, and be respectful to it at that time. Thus it is said. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one should avoid contempt and discrimination not only towards the pure Sangha who uphold the vows and hold the three baskets, but even towards those impure individuals who merely hold the signs of ordination, and one should generate the perception of the actual Sangha and treat them with respect. As it is said in the Sutra Encouraging Higher Intention: Those who desire qualities and dwell in the forest should not examine the faults of others. One should not think, "I am superior to others, I am the best." This is the root of all carelessness. One should not despise inferior monks. Thus it is said. Secondly, there are four common trainings: No matter how great the gain, do not abandon the Three Jewels. No matter what happens, do not seek refuge elsewhere. Always remember the qualities and make offerings. Remember the benefits at all six
