Relying solely on worldly aspirations and auspicious prayers, like the worldly three jewels established by worldly minds. The second is: The three jewels as refuge for seeking liberation, temporarily protecting from the fears of samsara, and ultimately able to establish in definite excellence, therefore they are infallible refuges. As the great scholar said: "The lord of samsara, no matter how virtuous, will deceive; the three jewels of refuge will not deceive." The way to take refuge is also: The Hearers take refuge in the three jewels with the Sangha as the main focus, the Pratyekabuddhas with the Dharma as the main focus, and the Mahayana with the Buddha as the main focus. The way the two vehicles, great and small, identify the refuge is also different. According to the Hinayana view: The Dharma that makes one a Buddha is the path of truth that does not study the Mahayana; the Dharma that makes one a Sangha is the path of truth that studies the Mahayana and does not study the Hinayana; the Dharma is the cessation of truth, which is included in Nirvana. As it says in the Abhidharmakosha: "Whoever takes refuge in the three, the Buddha and the Sangha, the path they practice, not learning and learning together, and takes refuge in Nirvana." Among them, according to the Vaibhashikas, the physical form of the Buddha and the Sangha is not considered a refuge. The Sautrantikas consider the path of truth, along with the physical form, to be the refuge. The Mahayana also has different views, but here, in general, the Sutra and Tantra are the same, divided into three: the object of manifestation and realization, the object of visualization, and the object of suchness. The first is: The Buddha Jewel is the embodiment of the three bodies, possessing two purities, ultimately perfect in fulfilling the two benefits. Regarding the Dharma Jewel: The Dharma of realization, its essence is inexpressible and inconceivable; its nature is the path to becoming a Buddha; its aspect is characterized by the cessation and path. Regarding the Dharma of scripture: It is the pure and excellent speech that explains the Dharma of realization, appearing as the form of names, sentences, and letters. Regarding the Sangha Jewel: They are the noble Bodhisattvas residing on the great earth, as well as practitioners who follow the Mahayana path of accumulation and preparation, and the four pairs and eight individuals of the Hinayana. The second is: Buddha images, scriptures, ordinary Sangha...

Those with faith believe that the lamas are the actual embodiment of the Three Jewels. Third, only the Buddha is the ultimate refuge, not the other two. As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Because of abandoning, because of the nature of deception, because of non-existence, because of being subject to destruction, the two dharmas and the assembly of noble ones are not the supreme refuge. For those who go for the sake of the sacred meaning, only the Buddha is the sole refuge." Thus it is said. The Buddha is also only the Dharmakaya. As it is said: "The Thubpa (Buddha) has a Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is the ultimate of that." Thus it is said. That Dharmakaya, which has already appeared in the continuum of others, is the refuge of the cause. The refuge of the result is the nature of one's own mind abiding in the nature of the Three Jewels. As stated in the Yeshe Drubpa: "The mind free from defilement and attainment is the Buddha, the unchanging and stainless is the Dharma, the spontaneously perfect qualities are the Sangha, therefore one's own mind is supreme." Thus it is said. The meaning of the word "Konchok" (དཀོན་མཆོག་, रत्न, ratna, Jewel) is: from the word Ratna (रत्न), it is established as Konchok (Jewel) by six qualities similar to precious jewels. As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Because it is rare in occurrence, because it is stainless, because it is powerful, and because it is an ornament of the world, because it is supreme, because it is immutable, it is Konchok (Jewel)." Thus it is said. Third, how long does one go for refuge? In the context of "from now until enlightenment," the general difference in time is that worldly people think until they have not obtained the small self-interest of this life and the next, and the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas think until life exists. Here, the Mahayana is that one goes for refuge until one has not obtained enlightenment. As stated in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Until the heart of enlightenment is reached." Thus it is said. Fourth, the benefits of going for refuge are: turning away from the practices of non-Buddhists, not being born in the three lower realms, becoming the basis of all vows, having no obstacles, having few illnesses and long life, purifying obscurations, and the benefit of accumulating merit. Thus it is said, there are seven: entering the ranks of inner Buddhists, not falling into the lower realms, becoming the basis of all vows, not being obstructed by obstacles from humans and non-humans, having few illnesses and long life, purifying previously accumulated karmic obscurations, and quickly attaining enlightenment by perfecting the two accumulations. First, turning away from the practices of non-Buddhists such as taking refuge in Brahma and Indra, and taking refuge in the Three Jewels.
