as well as refutations, etc. Explaining by connecting the associations. Thus, it is explained through the five key instructions. In particular, the profound sutras are explained through hidden meanings, provisional and definitive meanings, and so on. The tantras of secret mantras generally explain through the two ripenings and liberations, or the two truths. As the Maha Maya says: "Mantra and form, and the nature of dharma itself, the three unions should be known." Thus (explaining) the three yogas. In Hevajra (explaining) the three purities: "Outer, inner, secret, and likewise inner, suchness meaning, four aspects." Or, as the Abhisamayalankara says: "Having well-trained the karma mudra, the dharma mudra should be meditated upon, upon that great mudra, from that, the samaya truly arises." Thus (explaining) the four mudras, as well as outer, inner, other, and the four reliances, etc., although there are many explanations. However, in the Ancient Secret Great Perfection tradition, the Heruka Galpo says: "The seven ornaments of Maha Yoga, the arising of speech and the manner of becoming a Buddha, the extensive explanation of the limits and the manner of explanation, the aspects of differentiation, the individual vessel, the meaning of the truth should be known." Thus, Maha Yoga is through the seven ornaments, similarly, Anu Yoga is through the seven Agamas, and Ati Yoga opens the door of wisdom through the six common meanings. The practice sections, as the general precepts of the Guhyasamaja Tantra say: "Twenty methods of explanation and oral instructions, five summaries and five tantric precepts, five collections of Agamas and the methods of practice, are determined by five methods of union." Thus, twenty methods of explanation are taught. Specifically, the generation and completion stages all have five common meanings in common, and the illusion section explains through three or four tantras, etc. The commonality between the old and new is that they are explained through the six extremes and four modes, etc. In short, when explaining and listening, the mind does not wander away from the words and meanings of the Dharma, but remains in stillness, which is quiescence. The distinctions between the words and meanings are not confused, but are clear and the meaning is understood, which is insight. As the Sutra of the Array of Merits says: "Manjushri, thus, when listening, with one-pointedness, without distraction, the mind is held firmly, which is the samadhi of quiescence that accords with the sound. Discerning and clearly examining is the insight that distinguishes the meaning." Thus. In short, no matter how the Dharma is explained, the definitive instructions cut off attachment to this life, the definitive

Liberation from the ocean of samsara through the key of earth, and liberation into the equality of existence and peace through the key of the essential meaning of the heart, are gathered together. Fourth, the benefits of listening and teaching are twofold. First, the benefits obtained primarily by the listener: From the Gandi Sutra: "To indicate the time for teaching the sacred Dharma, the sound of beating a drum or Gandi, hearing it will attain enlightenment, what need is there to mention those who come to listen?" Also, from the Arya Bodhisattva Pitaka: "Just as those with eyes can see forms when there is a lamp, so too, through hearing, one will come to know the Dharma of virtue and non-virtue." Also, from the Sutra of the Prophecy of Giving by Ashoka: "Ananda, if one were to give alms by filling the three thousand great thousand world systems with various jewels, it would not equal the merit of hearing even a single verse of this Dharma. That would generate much more merit." Also, in the Uttaratantra: "Wisdom is supreme, and its basis is listening; therefore, listening is supreme." Also, from the Jataka: "Listening is the lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance, it is the supreme wealth that thieves and others cannot take away, it is the weapon that destroys the enemy of all delusion, it is the supreme friend that reveals the methods and instructions." Thus it is said. Second, the benefits obtained by the teacher: From the Sutra: "For whose benefit I teach the Dharma, properly expounding it becomes an offering. Flowers, perfumes, and lamps are not a perfect offering to the Victorious Ones." Also: "If one were to fill as many Buddha fields as there are with the seven precious jewels, and offer them to the Victorious Ones with great joy, it would not equal the merit of giving a single verse to a single sentient being. That gift of jewels is extremely vast, but compared to the gift of a verse accomplished with compassion, even rain cannot reach it, let alone count it; how could one even think of two or three?" Also, from the Root Tantra, Secret Essence: "The great secret essence of the mudra of all the Tathagatas, whoever understands and speaks it, that very one is me, and also has complete power." Also, in the Ratnavali: "For the sake of the Dharma, and likewise, explaining the meaning of the scriptures, and all the giving of Dharma, one will obtain the memory of past lives." Thus, the benefits are immeasurable.

Although it is said to be non-existent, this is just a brief summary. This slight discourse on the method of teaching and listening to the Dharma was also made at the urging of the two lamas, Sang-ngak Tenzin and Kunzang Namgyal, from the Khampa region, who are of good heart and rich in the wealth of faith, diligence, and learning. It was completed in one long session on the evening of the twenty-eighth day of the ninth Mongolian month by the mad bhikshu, the ignorant Dharma Shri, who lives by the grace of the Great Treasure Guru. May it be virtuous and auspicious!
