Chapter One: The General Basis for Explaining the Three Vows. Therefore, the Dharma to be explained here is this treatise, "A Definitive Explanation of the Three Vows." There are three ways to explain it: the title of the treatise, the actual treatise that corresponds to the title, and the author's colophon on how the treatise was composed. First, the treatise is entitled "A Definitive Explanation of the Three Vows, a Component of the Path of the Great Perfection of Naturalness." This is stated on the title page of the book. The Great Perfection of Naturalness refers to the teaching that the nature of mind is primordially enlightened as the nature of a Buddha. The complete and unerring path for establishing this is the vehicle of the Great Secret, the Unexcelled Ati Yoga. Moreover, all the Sutra and Tantra vehicles, such as Anu, which serve as the steps of this path, through either direct or indirect means, become the cause for realizing that very nature. Therefore, all the teachings of the Victorious Ones are the conditions for the path of the Great Perfection. The key is that the root or essence of what is to be practiced in all these teachings also becomes the practice of the Three Vows. The Three Vows are as stated in the Vajra Peak Sutra: "The Pratimoksha, the Bodhicitta, and the vows of the Vidyadhara Mantra." The meaning of these three is determined without exaggeration or denigration, hence the term "Definitive Explanation." A treatise is so called because here, the author, with an undistracted mind, explains the meaning of the Buddha's words as a means for sentient beings to attain liberation. The second part has three points: the preliminaries for engaging in the explanation, the actual nature of the explanation itself, and the activities that complete the explanation. The first part has two points: offering praise and vowing to compose the treatise. The first part also has two points, first is prostrating to the Guru who bestows the kindness of the Three Vows: Namo Guruve. Sanskrit Romanization: namo guruve, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to the Guru). Translated, it means: Homage to the Guru. The word Guru implies heaviness, because the Guru is heavy with the burden of qualities, hence the term Guru. Some may think that the term Guru is only popular in Secret Mantra, and that there is no such term mentioned in Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows. This is not the case, as the Fifty Verses on the Discipline of a Monk states: "The door of the place where the Guru resides, should be knocked gently with the hand." And the Twenty Vows states: "The Guru abides in the vows and is skilled, one should receive from one who is capable." Therefore, it is not so. Second

Therefore, he knew that his complete understanding of all the Dharma in this life was due to the power of the great master Padmasambhava's blessings on his mind-stream through many past lives. And he was also a prophesier of unsurpassed enlightenment. Therefore, he paid homage to him as follows: From the churning of the ocean of the two glorious accumulations, The white light of wisdom and compassion pours down the secret rain of certainty, Supreme crown ornament of all the scholars and siddhas of the snowy land, I prostrate to the lotus-born Vajra, the guru of beings. This means that from the glory of perfecting the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, unobstructed wisdom arises for all knowable things, and selfless love, great compassion, arises effortlessly. Therefore, the activity of leading sentient beings to the ultimate secret, unsurpassed path and fruition manifests unceasingly. These are likened to the ancient Indian tale of the moon emerging from the churning of the ocean, and the moonlight has a cool nature and the function of dispelling heat, so it is compared to the essence of rain, as an ornament of metaphor. Although the snowy land is specifically mentioned as the special field of taming of the master himself, in reality, he is the speech vajra of all the Tathagatas, taking the form of a teacher. He is the greatest vidyadhara in the world, like the second teacher of the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, he should be revered as the supreme crown ornament of all the scholars and siddhas on earth. Because he places sentient beings in their respective benefits and happiness, he is the guru of beings. Therefore, the author bows with great joy to the feet of the master Lotus-born Vajra, who possesses such qualities. Paying homage with the three doors of body, speech, and mind in the utmost respect is the conventional homage. Realizing that the object and the subject are inseparable is the homage of seeing the ultimate view. The necessity of doing so is that by perfecting the accumulations, obstacles are pacified, so that the composition can be completed. And those who listen and contemplate on this will also enter with reverence, recognizing that this is a supreme object and treatise. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: The thoughts of people with merit will all be accomplished. Nagarjuna also said: The praise and offering of the author of the treatise to the teacher is not without fruit.
