Explanation of how the root downfalls of the Sutra of Akashagarbha are included in the root downfalls of a Bodhisattva. Translator Dharmashri. Explanation of how the root downfalls of the Sutra of Akashagarbha are included in the root downfalls of a Bodhisattva. Translator Dharmashri. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Here, I will briefly explain the meaning of the root downfalls of a Bodhisattva that appear in the Sutra of Akashagarbha. The basis for downfall is any ordinary being, such as a human or yaksha, who has properly taken the Bodhisattva vow with the mind of entering the Bodhisattva path. It is said that all those who have the Bodhisattva vow are subject to downfall. An ordinary being is also a beginner, and it is impossible to have a root downfall before entering the practice. However, it is explicitly mentioned that "son of good family or daughter of good family" refers to any male or female who has the Bodhisattva vow, because they are likely to occur, so these two are mentioned, just as the downfall of a king is established because it is likely to occur to a king. The first downfall is: In the sutra, it says: "Son of good family, a king of royal lineage who has been empowered from the crown of his head, steals the property of a stupa, or steals the property of the Sangha, or steals what is offered to the Sangha of the four directions, is the first root downfall." The basis for this is: any property of a Buddha stupa or image, and the scriptures of the holy Dharma, and any requisites of the Dharma speaker, and the permanently abiding Sangha, and the property of those who suddenly come from the four directions. In this Mahayana, the value is not mentioned, but only what is considered property in the world. Those who are close to the Three Jewels as servants are called divine people, and also property that has not been possessed by kings and ministers, etc. Thought: Thinking that it belongs to any of the Three Jewels and knowing that it does not belong to oneself.

Oh! The intention is: With a mind of coveting and plundering, due to any of the three afflictions, not just once, but doing it a second time, possessing great shamelessness and recklessness. The action is: oneself or instigating others to steal. The completion is: When the second act is committed in that place of transgression, and one completely decides from the heart that the property is one's own. Similarly, for all other root downfalls, it should be known that the ultimate is when one commits the second act with extreme entanglement of not knowing shame or having any scruples. This is the second downfall of a Bodhisattva because it is a downfall of taking what is not given. The second downfall is: The sutra says: "Whoever abandons the Dharma and causes others to abandon it, expounding the liberation of the Hearers, or expounding the liberation of the Solitary Realizers, or expounding the liberation of the Great Vehicle, abandoning and causing others to abandon, this is the second root downfall." The basis is: Any of the three vehicles' Dharma, scriptures that show that all afflictions of the three realms should be abandoned, and any of the virtuous qualities that belong to the three trainings that practice its meaning. The perception is: Perceiving it as incompatible with the method of attaining liberation. The intention is: Having strong hatred and affliction towards it. The action is: Abandoning it with one's own body, speech, and mind, or causing others to do so. The completion is: When the second act is committed in that place of transgression. This is the fourth downfall of a Bodhisattva. The third downfall is: The sutra says: "Whoever has gone forth for my sake, shaving their hair and beard, wearing robes, whether they have taken vows or not, whether they have broken their vows or have vows, takes away their robes, or forces them to live in a lay household, or strikes their body with weapons, or throws them into prison, or causes them to lose their life, this is the third root downfall." The basis is: Whether or not they have vows, whoever has gone forth for the Buddha's teachings and holds the appearance of a renunciate. The perception is: Whether or not it is mistaken, perceiving them as abiding in the ranks of the renunciates. The intention is: Generally hating robes, or someone from one's own retinue having gone forth
