It is not the case that enlightenment is not realized without hearing. Thus it is said. The reasoning is: The path of the Lesser Vehicle is not a path that is inseparable from the two special qualities of skillful means and wisdom, because it has the wisdom that realizes emptiness. If you assert this, it contradicts the Compendium Sutra: "Without skillful means and separated from wisdom, one falls into the state of a Hearer." And, "Because one falls into existence and peace, realization is also inferior." It is not appropriate to say that a Mahayana person is separated from the happiness of thinking of others' welfare, the happiness of finding the means to that, the happiness of finding such vast Dharma, and the happiness of realizing emptiness, because they have the wisdom that realizes emptiness. If you assert this, it contradicts the Ornament Sutra: "Those who abandon the greatly appropriate mind of enlightenment, abandon the mind of others' welfare and finding the means to that, as well as the meaning of the great intention and obtaining that supreme, that happiness, and go to peace." That is from the perspective of focusing on signs. As it says, the Mother of Results has two types of fundamental knowledge, near and far. The characteristic of the first is the wisdom of the noble Bodhisattvas who are skilled in the means of accomplishing the Mother of Results. The characteristic of the second is the wisdom of the noble Hearers of the Lesser Vehicle who are not skilled in the means of accomplishing the Mother of Results. Form, etc., the aggregates are emptiness. As it says, there are three aspects: the object-possessing fundamental knowledge, the object to be abandoned - clinging to signs, and how to abandon them with antidotes. The first has two aspects: the antidote fundamental knowledge and the fundamental knowledge of the opposing side. The characteristic of the first is the wisdom of the noble Mahayana practitioners who are not bound by the clinging to signs that clings to the three - basis, path, and result - as signs. The characteristic of the second is the wisdom of the noble Hearers of the Lesser Vehicle who are bound by that. What is the meaning of bound and unbound? The fundamental knowledge of the Mahayana is said to be unbound by that because, with the power of directly realizing the three - basis, path, and result - it is able to abandon the clinging to signs, together with its seeds, on its own path. The fundamental knowledge of the Lesser Vehicle is said to be bound by that because, with the power of not realizing it in that way, it is not able to abandon the seeds on its own path. The second is the mind that clings to conditioned phenomena as independent, without relying on others. It has two aspects: that which is included by afflictive obscurations and that which is included by cognitive obscurations. The first is the innate and imputed self-grasping of a person.

For example. Secondly, it is the coarse stain of manifest clinging, which arises from self-grasping of one's own cause, the Dharma, and which manifestly clings to objects. There are two types of this, distinguished by clinging and by object. The first has two types of clinging to characteristics, which are included in clinging to substance and clinging to imputation. The first is like the self-grasping that conceptualizes the three spheres in relation to the phenomena of object and subject. This is the same in meaning as grasping at the self of phenomena. To differentiate, there are two types of grasping at the self of phenomena: the innate, such as the mind that inherently grasps objects and subjects as true without relying on scripture, reasoning, etc.; and the imputed, such as the mind that grasps objects and subjects as true through investigation and analysis, using what appears to be scripture and reasoning as reasons. The second is like the conceptual obscuration of knowledge, which manifestly clings to the phenomena of object and subject as mere imputations. There are two types of this: imputation (coarse) and very subtle. The first is both the conceptualization of clinging to characteristics and the conceptualization of mixing sound and meaning, and it exists up to the seventh ground. The second is the clinging that clings to objects as mere imputations, subtle and very subtle, and it exists up to the subsequent attainment of the tenth ground. Secondly, there are three types of clinging to characteristics in relation to the basis, path, and result. First, there are two types of clinging to characteristics in relation to the nature of the basis and the entities of the basis, as indicated by the verse: Forms, etc., aggregates are emptiness, The consciousness of actions is a discordant aspect. Second, clinging to characteristics on the path is: Generosity, etc., aspects of enlightenment, The consciousness of actions is a discordant aspect. As shown by the verse. Third: Attachment to kings, etc., is subtle. As shown by the verse. Therefore, here the clinging to characteristics that binds is directly shown, and the basis of the lesser vehicle, bound by it, is shown symbolically. Third, it is not explained by combining the antidote, the basis of consciousness, and all clinging to characteristics as the antidote to be abandoned, because if it is the mind of clinging to characteristics, then it is not all-pervasive, just as it is not actually possessed by the antidote that destroys itself. As the verse says: Forms, etc., are impermanent, etc. The cultivation of the basis of consciousness, the equality of the cultivation of the basis of consciousness, the three categories of the remaining meaning of characteristics, and the three. The characteristic of the first is the practice of meditating on either of the two selflessnesses. To differentiate, there are two types: the directly shown cultivation of the basis of consciousness, and the indirectly shown cultivation of the basis of consciousness of the lesser vehicle.
