The Nine Dharmas Representing the Basis of Wisdom. Third, explaining the dharmas that represent the basis of wisdom, there are two aspects: the arrangement of connections as explained in the sutras, and the manner in which it is explained by the Ornament. First, proceeding from the sutra of the pure meditation path just mentioned above, Subhuti inquired: This Mother (Prajnaparamita) is not the edge of this shore, nor is it the state of the far shore, nor does it abide in between the two. This shows that the Prajnaparamita taught in the second section does not abide in the three—samsara, nirvana, and the bardo. The Prajnaparamita that abides there is not found in either the sutra or the root text, but is completed by the commentary. Proceeding from that sutra, as it is said, Subhuti inquired: If someone knows this Mother in what way, will this Prajnaparamita be abandoned? This explains that the Prajnaparamita of the image is far from the Mother. He inquired: It is wonderful that Bodhisattvas, without attachment or non-attachment, explain this Mother well and bring it to the end. This explains how the Prajnaparamita of the Bodhisattva is close to the Fruition Mother. Shariputra asked Subhuti what attachment and non-attachment are. In response, he said: If one conceives of form as emptiness, it is attachment. And so on, this shows that the Prajnaparamita of the image includes the opposing aspects of entering the Fruition Mother. Subhuti said: What is non-attachment? The answer is: When a great Bodhisattva practices the Mother, there is no conception of form as form. And so on, this shows the antidote to the attachment to the Prajnaparamita of the Bodhisattva. In the sutra of reason, "Subtle Attachment," proceeding from "If one thinks of the Tathagata, it is attachment," Subhuti inquired: This Mother is profound. The Buddha replied: Because all dharmas are empty of inherent existence. And so on, this establishes the opposing aspect of subtle attachment. Then, Subhuti inquired: The nature of all dharmas is not two, but one. Whatever is the nature of all dharmas is non-nature. And so on, this explains the antidote to that attachment. Previously, proceeding from the profundity of the Prajnaparamita of inherent existence, Subhuti inquired: The Mother is difficult to realize. The Buddha replied: That is

No one has seen, no one has heard, no one has known, completely unknown. This says it is difficult to understand. From this, it is extended, praying: This mother is inconceivable. This says the inconceivable. Thus, from explaining the difference between the two Prajnaparamitas, it is extended, Subhuti prays: How should the Great Vehicle Mother be practiced? The Buddha taught: When practicing that, if you do not practice on form, then you practice on that. Etc., these are the practices taught from the stage of the basis of knowledge. This is actually the practice of the path of knowledge, because it is the practice of entering the second chapter of Prajnaparamita. In the Sutra of Seven Appearances, it is said that all dharmas are like illusions, from which it is extended, Indra asks Subhuti, what is the extent of knowledge there? The answer is: Kausika, when practicing that, does not make form an arrogant mind, does not use form to form, and does not make form the self and give rise to an arrogant mind. Etc., these are the differences in the grasping of the equality of that practice. Then, by the power of the Buddha, the gods of the desire realm and the form realm, with the words of the thousand Buddhas of the Good Kalpa, will be able to see this Prajnaparamita with their minds. Etc., these are the teachings of the path of seeing arising from the stage of the basis of knowledge. This is actually the Prajnaparamita of the path of knowledge, because it is the identification of the most important Prajnaparamita that actually arises from that practice. The way of teaching is different, in the second chapter, it is taught from the way of determining the nature of dharma, with benefits, etc., while here it is taught from the perspective of those who pass through the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers with the eye of wisdom, which is the difference. Thus, at the end of the third chapter, Subhuti said: This mother does not obtain any dharma, nor does she cause it not to be obtained. Etc., this mother does not pass through the desire realm, nor does she cause it to abide. Etc., this mother does not give the dharmas of the Buddhas, nor does she take them away. Etc., these three sutras are the summary of the meaning of the first to third chapters, and the explanation of their meaning is: Thus and so, and thus and so.
