Meaning of the Text Meaning of the Text The Activities of Previous Lives and the Manner of Taking Birth Here, our glorious and sacred Lama is one who follows the conduct of all the Tathagatas. This great being has truly abided in the state of perfect Buddhahood. However, to fully express the qualities of his liberation is inconceivable. Even the Bodhisattvas of the tenth bhumi, whose habitual tendencies are extremely subtle, are not within its scope, so how could it be within the realm of the minds of us ordinary beings? Therefore, I dare not speak of even a fraction of the deeds of this holy being. Why is that? This great being, from beginningless time, has attained perfect enlightenment through the liberation of self-aware wisdom in the expanse of the unchanging fundamental realm. In the utterly pure realm of the luminosity of the Dharma nature, without beginning or end, in a state where body and wisdom are inseparable, he abides with the same intention as all the Buddhas of the three times. Moreover, the wisdom Dharmakaya, which is the aspect of self-nature purity, the pacification of elaboration; and the Sambhogakaya, which is the self-appearance in the wheel of the mandala, inseparable in essence from the wisdom Dharmakaya, distinguished by the ultimate purity of sudden purity, in which all dharmas appear as pure and vast; and the Nirmanakaya, which is the aspect of wisdom of love and power, possessing the qualities to show the two Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya that appear to others to be tamed. Thus, since it is only the realm of the Tathagatas and does not appear to other beings to be tamed, the three Kayas of the Buddha's self-appearance, gathered by one's own lineage, abide in a state of inseparable essence without wavering. However, the two Kayas of self-appearance, Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya, and the pure mindstream of the beings to be tamed, due to the convergence of the causes of previous aspirations, the body that appears to others to be tamed, the Sambhogakaya appearing to the Bodhisattvas of the pure tenth bhumi, and the inconceivable manifestations of the Nirmanakaya appearing to the various beings to be tamed, both pure and impure, appear manifestly before those who are to be tamed, in accordance with the individual capacities of the beings to be tamed, establishing the basis of the path, and the activities of the path and the fruit.

Subduing with immeasurable means: Just as the image of a deity appears on a ground of lapis lazuli, or just as the image of the moon appears in as many water vessels as there are, the activity of appearing without obstruction has been present since beginningless time. As it is said in the Tantra of the Glorious Vajrasattva Magical Net, "Because of the connection with great compassion, all six realms and times appear without exception." And also in the Uttaratantra, "Just as on a pure ground of lapis lazuli, the image of the body of a deity appears, so on the pure ground of sentient beings' minds, the image of the body of the King of Sages appears." And also, "In the mandala of the world's victors, for those who are pure, near, and far, like the image of the moon in water and space, seeing that is of two kinds." As it is said. In short, the Root Tantra of Magical Illusion says, "In the ten directions and four times, in the immeasurable, the meanings of taming are shown separately. All high and low vehicles, and the reversed and confused, the immeasurable, and all the great assemblies of peaceful and wrathful, each corresponding and universally appearing." And also in the Avatamsaka Sutra, "O son of good family, the emanations of the Tathagata are immeasurable. Whatever being is to be tamed, he accomplishes the purpose with that form, color, and name." Thus, for those to be tamed, the Buddha appears as a Buddha, the Bodhisattva appears as a Bodhisattva, and likewise the Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, Brahma, Indra, Chakravartin, ascetic, Brahmin, householder, birds and wild animals, etc., and even boats, bridges, and medicine, etc., whatever tames them, he shows the various forms of stability and movement, accomplishing the benefit of limitless beings to be tamed. In this field, if we briefly describe the slight differences that are accomplished in the common appearance of some parts of the beings to be tamed, then in the prophecy of the self-revealed Sha'ug Treasure, it is said, "The person who recites this is the translator Vairochana. In the past, in countless kalpas, having generated the supreme mind of enlightenment, although he is enlightened in the nature of the three bodies, with the compassion of skillful means, he appears in many emanations." As it is said, this venerable lord was a beggar in the past.
