Glorious Dharmakīrti. Glorious Dharmakīrti. It is said that the glorious Dharmakīrti was born in a place called "Jewel on the Crown of the Southern King," according to the scholars of the past. It is known both internally and externally that it is the land of Tre-ma-la, so it is said that in ancient times it was known as the Jewel on the Crown of the King. As for the time of his birth, it was during the time of King Simha V and Gsal-ba, etc. In the past, he was born as the son of a Tirthika (non-Buddhist) named Kuntu Rōnananda of the Brahmin caste. From a young age, he was extremely intelligent. He thoroughly studied crafts, sciences including the Vedas, medicine, grammar, and all the tenets of the Tirthikas, becoming an expert in the tenets of the Tirthikas. At a time when the Brahmins should have praised and especially lauded him, he saw some of the Buddha's teachings and saw faults in his own teacher and tenets. He developed faith in the Buddha and the sacred Dharma and converted to the guise of a Buddhist lay follower. When the Brahmins asked him the reason, he praised the Buddha, so they expelled him from his residence. Then, he went to the central region and became a monk under the tutelage of the teacher Dharmapāla, becoming proficient in the three baskets (Tripitaka). He could recite about five hundred Sutras, Vinayas, Abhidharmas, and Dharani-Mantras from memory. He was not satisfied with other treatises on logic. He listened to the Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition) from Īśvarasena once and became equal to Īśvarasena himself. After listening twice, he became equal to Dignāga. After listening three times, Īśvarasena himself realized that some of Dignāga's ideas were mistaken. When he repeated it to the teacher, he was very pleased and said, "You are equal to Dignāga, refuting all the mistaken tenets. Please also write a commentary on the Pramāṇasamuccaya (Compendium on Valid Cognition)." He received permission from the teacher. He requested secret mantras from the teacher and practiced them. Heruka appeared to him in person and asked what he desired. He said, "I wish to be victorious in all directions!" (Heruka) said "Ha ha hūṃ" (ཧ་ཧ་ཧཱུྃ,ह ह हुं,ha ha hūṃ) and immediately disappeared. Then, wanting to learn the secret words of the Tirthika tenets, he disguised himself as a servant and went to the southern region. He asked who was the most learned.

It is said that there was a person named "Unmatched in Playing with Youth." When he arrived there, he was powerful, and the internal and external affairs were handled by fifty male servants and fifty female servants, which were all accomplished by one teacher. The youth playing with his wife was very happy. When asked what he wanted, he said, "I want to hear about the tenets." So, he showed all the knowledge. Some secret words were not shown to others except for the son and wife, and he also satisfied the son and wife with work, and learned by asking them. There, he also learned well how to prevent the key issues of the tenets. The Brahmin was greedy for wealth, thinking that if he did not give wealth, he would be guilty, so he took seven thousand gold coins from a Yaksha living there and gave them to the youth playing. He used his own salary of five hundred panas to hold a grand feast for the Brahmins, and then fled that night. In a large market called Kaka Kuha, which had a palace, he posted a notice saying, "Who wants to debate here?" So, the Brahmin Kana Gupta, who held the Vaisheshika school, and about five hundred others who held the tenets of the six views gathered. After three months of debate, he refuted everyone and brought them into Buddhism. The king also allowed about fifty wealthy Brahmins among them to each establish a Buddhist temple. The youth playing heard this news and was very angry, and came to debate with five hundred Brahmins. He declared to the king, "If I win, kill Dharmakirti; if Dharmakirti wins, kill me." The teacher said, "If the youth playing wins, the king will know. If I win, do not kill the youth playing, let him enter Buddhism." So, they debated with the doctrine as evidence. The five hundred unique vows of the youth playing were all refuted one by one with a hundred kinds of reasoning. There, the youth playing also offered to the Buddhists. The five hundred Brahmins also believed in Buddhism and became monks. He also defeated all other heretical debaters. Afterwards, he went to the area of Devali, this area
