composed a work. Thus, considering the activities of the Dharma, although it transcends the realm of thought, in brief, there were about six hundred and fifty-four Dharma foundations established before and after, and even more than the Mahayana Sangha during the time of Asanga. In total, it is said that there were about sixty thousand Mahayana monks. Vasubandhu lived to be nearly a hundred years old. Finally, surrounded by a thousand disciples, he went to Nepal (and) while teaching the Dharma, he saw a householder monk wearing monastic robes plowing a field. He said, "The teachings of the Buddha are declining," and became disheartened. After teaching the Dharma in the midst of the Sangha, he recited the Ushnishavijaya Dharani (藏文:གཙུག་ཏོར་རྣམ་རྒྱལ་གྱི་གཟུངས་) backwards three times and passed away immediately. For a time, it was said that the sun of the Dharma had set. Afterwards, the disciples also built a stupa for him. In the later years of Master Vasubandhu's life, after the death of King Samudra, a powerful king named Sri Harsha appeared in the western land of Maru. That king wanted to destroy the Islamic teachings, so he built a large Islamic monastery made entirely of wood. He gathered all the Islamic teachers and provided them with all kinds of offerings for many months. He also collected all the texts of their doctrines and burned them all in a fire, burning to death about twelve thousand people who adhered to Islamic doctrines. It is said that only one weaver who knew Islamic doctrines survived, and the later Muslims are said to be his descendants. During that time, the individuals who benefited beings were: Master Lodro Tenden in eastern India, and in the west, the later years of Asanga's disciple Sangye Bang, and the time when Yonten Wo's activities flourished. In Kashmir, the monks Gedun Bang and others carried out these activities.

The teacher Lodrö Tenpa (Intelligence Steadfast), when reciting the ninety-nine works of Vasubandhu, was listened to with great reverence by an intelligent pigeon in his neck. After it died, it was immediately reborn as the son of a merchant in the south. At the age of seven, he asked, "Where is the teacher Vasubandhu?" He was taken to Vasubandhu and studied, understanding without difficulty. At that time, he found a handful of peas and wondered if he could eat them, so he went to a Tara temple. Thinking that it was not right to eat them without offering them to the Holy Mother, he offered some peas, but they rolled away. Even after offering all the peas, they still rolled away, so he cried like a child. The Holy Mother showed her face and said, "Do not cry, I will bless you." In that instant, he became infinitely wise. Later, he became a holder of the Sthavira Tripitaka, all his activities were prophesied by Tara, and he was skilled in all the Abhidharma of the Great and Small Vehicles, and he recited the Ratnakuta Sutra. He also wrote a commentary on the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way). After Vasubandhu passed away, he defeated the evil non-Buddhist adversaries and became known as the chief of speakers.

All please listen carefully. A mantra practitioner's teacher, through receiving and practicing vidyā-mantras, received the vision of Mañjuśrī. He stayed in meditation for a long time in a very secluded cave in the land of Oḍiviśa. Once, in Lendhra (Nālandā), a debate arose with a heretic named Durjaya, who claimed to see his own deity directly and was very skilled in logic, making him difficult to defeat. Therefore, Dignāga was invited. Dignāga defeated that heretic three times and converted him to Buddhism. It is said that he composed many treatises on consciousness-only and logic there, totaling about one hundred treatises. Later, when he was again meditating in his former cave, he thought that this logical system, which arose from the power of his extraordinary wisdom, had caused the previously composed treatises to become scattered, so it was necessary to integrate them. Therefore, he wrote the opening praise and statement of intent of the Compendium on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇasamuccaya): "Having become a valid cognizer, desiring to benefit beings, The Teacher, the Sugata, I prostrate. In order to establish validity, from all my own treatises, Having gathered the scattered, here I make one." When he wrote these words with stone chalk, an earthquake occurred, light filled all directions, and a great sound arose. At that time, a Brahmin named Black Brahmin, realizing that this was some kind of omen, came and erased these words after the teacher had gone out for alms. He erased them twice in this way. The third time, he wrote: "If this is erased for the sake of joking or jesting, then because there is a great need, please do not erase it. If you want to debate because the meaning is wrong, then manifest your body." After writing this, he came again to erase it after the teacher had gone out for alms, saw these words, and stopped. The teacher then used the Dharma as evidence and engaged in debate with him. After defeating the heretic many times, the teacher said, "Now join the Dharma." That heretic recited mantras and scattered ashes, burning all the teacher's utensils, and the teacher himself was almost burned. Then that heretic left. I thought, if I cannot even help this one sentient being, what need is there to mention others? Just as he was about to abandon bodhicitta, the noble Mañjuśrī appeared directly and said, "Son, do not do this, do not do this. If you encounter inferior people, evil wisdom will arise."
