Collection of Mind Training Teachings LJ39: A Complete and Clear Instruction on the Four Attachments Text: Primarily Explaining the Practice Based on Scriptures Collection of Mind Training Teachings: A Complete and Clear Instruction on the Four Attachments. Whose wisdom, like a celestial path, pervades all that is knowable. Whose compassion, like moonlight, adorns the crown of beings. Your activity, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, is a treasure that fulfills all needs. May the incomparable protector, Shakya Simha, bestow goodness upon beings. The wisdom of all Buddhas of the three times, unified as Manjushri. Avalokiteshvara, who vowed to protect all beings of the three realms. Sakya Pandita, who took human form to guide beings in the degenerate age. To him, whose name is difficult to pronounce, I prostrate with reverence. Through the power of accumulated merit, I have obtained a body to practice the sacred Dharma. With wealth spontaneously present, I make offerings to the teachings and those who uphold them. To the one with a pure and virtuous mind, this is the answer to your repeated questions. Here, I will speak of the uncommon essential instructions of the Great Vehicle. Among these, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, without being asked, skillfully benefits all the worlds. In accordance with the dispositions, thoughts, and latent tendencies of those to be tamed, he taught as many collections of teachings as there are, which are all included in the Paramitas and the Vajrayana. Of these, the former is divided into the practice that mainly explains the scriptures and the practice of essential pith instructions. If we focus on the practice that mainly explains the scriptures, then Lord Maitreya, in the 'Ornament of Clear Realization,' explains the stages of the path of the eight topics and seventy aspects of the Prajnaparamita Sutra, and in the 'Ornament of the Sutras,' he explains the stages of the path of the various sutras of the Great Vehicle, such as faith in lineage and Dharma. The noble Nagarjuna, in the 'Precious Garland,' explains the stages of the path of achieving higher realms and definite goodness, with faith and wisdom as the means of achievement. The teacher Aryadeva, by abandoning the four perversions, with the Buddha as the object of focus, perfected the conduct of a Bodhisattva, cutting off the afflictions, including their causes, and making it a suitable vessel for the essence of reality, thus revealing the stages of the path of the nectar of suchness. The teacher Shantarakshita, on the basis of the leisure and endowments of the human body, integrates the nature of the Bodhisattva's conduct—the six perfections—into practice. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having taken vows and connected with pure aspirations, the stages of the path to Buddhahood were taught. Jo bo rje said: 'One who abandons attachment to this life and only practices for the next life is a small person. One who abandons the happiness of samsara and only practices for liberation is a medium person. One who strives for Buddhahood for the benefit of sentient beings is a great person.' He taught these three stages of the path. Glorious Chandrakirti said: 'In the state of an ordinary being, cultivate compassion, bodhicitta, and non-dual wisdom. When the state of an arya is attained, the ten perfections lead through the ten bhumis, accomplishing the three kayas.' These are the excellent traditions explained without error by the masters of the great vehicle's teachings, who have attained mastery. However, these teachings should be understood by those who have trained their minds in the scriptures, and not understood here in a brief manner. Secondly, taking these meanings into practice through the essential points of oral instructions. Although there appear to be many, the main ones are those given by Lama Serlingpa to Jo bo rje, and those given by Lord Manjushri to the Sakya Lama. Firstly, the former: Establishing the foundation for generating bodhicitta through the four thoughts: the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, impermanence of death, the law of karma, and the faults of samsara. Having cultivated loving-kindness and compassion for a long time as preparation, then mainly meditating on the bodhicitta of exchanging self and others, and when the time is right, also meditating on ultimate bodhicitta. Transforming adverse conditions into the path to enlightenment as a branch of the path, condensing the practice of a lifetime, showing the measure of mental training, the vows of mental training, and the precepts of mental training. This is an excellent path that is small in appearance but great in effect. Jo bo rje only gave this to Geshe Dromtonpa in Tibet, and Geshe only gave it to his three spiritual brothers. From then on, it became very popular, a great path known like the sun and moon in this snowy mountain region. The practice of these should be looked at in the writings of Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen and Sempa Chenpo Zhonnu Gyalchok, and others. Now, turning the mind to Dharma by separating from attachment to this life. Now, the teachings given by Lord Manjushri to the Sakya Lama, which are similar in practice to the previous ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
