'That is long.' Therefore, all the inferior, degenerate, and suffering of the world and beyond arise from clinging to self as good. And all the happiness of the world and beyond arises from sentient beings. Therefore, one should view all sentient beings as virtuous and break down pride. The third verse: Third, because afflictions will not allow you to do so, you must also abandon them: 'In all activities, examine your own mindstream, as soon as afflictions arise, they harm both self and others, you should learn to forcefully prevent them from the beginning.' This means that in all activities, examine your own mindstream, and as soon as afflictions arise, learn to forcefully prevent them. No matter which of the four activities you do, examine your own mindstream with mindfulness and awareness to see if desire and other conceptual thoughts arise. As soon as they arise in yourself, think of abandoning them, even if it's just a little bit. You should deal with afflictions like destroying a worm that is moving forward, just like a couple guarding against thieves, so that later you will not become blind and will never have afflictions arise again. If afflictions increase in your mindstream, then hatred and everything else will increase more and more. As it is said in the sutra: 'Similarly, trusting in sleep will lead to more sleep. Similarly, the greater the desire, the greater the craving for alcohol.' The habits of afflictions will become stronger and stronger, so that strong afflictions will arise in the face of all inferior objects, and you will have to experience heavy and great suffering because of them. If you abandon afflictions, the habits will become weaker and weaker, and the previous habits will gradually disappear, and even in the face of beautiful objects, only slight habits will arise. Because its karmic results are small, it will definitely be experienced. You should view afflictions as enemies and increase the power of antidotes. Shantideva said: 'Even if burned or killed, or even beheaded, in any way, one should not submit to the enemy of afflictions.' Therefore, worldly enemies will not harm this life, but afflictions will harm lifetime after lifetime. 'My enemy of afflictions, is like time without beginning or end. Other enemies, cannot last as long as afflictions.' Furthermore, if you flatter worldly enemies, they will not only not harm you, but will also provide help. But if you flatter afflictions, things will only get worse. 'If you rely on them in a harmonious way, everything will bring benefit and happiness. But if you rely on the enemy of afflictions, in the end it will only bring suffering and harm.' Furthermore, worldly enemies will take away body, life, and wealth --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They only cause harm, and afflictions generate immeasurable suffering in samsara. If gods and asuras (non-gods) all rise up as enemies against me, they still cannot drag me into the fire of Avici hell. This powerful enemy of afflictions, once encountered, can destroy even Mount Meru in an instant, leaving not even ashes behind.' Therefore, regard afflictions as enemies and abandon them. Worldly enemies may still cause harm later even if they escape; but if afflictions are cut off, they will not arise again, like a seed that has been burned. The way to abandon them is through conduct, meditation, and view. For beginners, because the antidotal force is weak, afflictions easily arise and are difficult to control, so they should be abandoned through conduct. In terms of meditation, each affliction has a corresponding antidote. Meditating on any of the three types of individuals (of varying capacity) becomes the antidote to all afflictions, so meditating on one is sufficient. When intelligence has reached a certain level, afflictions have no place to dwell, and recognizing this is enough; there is no need to deliberately abandon them. 'Afflictions, afflictions, abandon them with the eye of wisdom.' Fourth verse: Those who are extremely evil by nature, burdened by sin and intense suffering, should be cherished as extremely rare and precious, and taught with care. 'Those beings who are evil by nature, and those oppressed by sin and intense suffering, should be cherished and diligently helped as if encountering a precious treasure.' Evil by nature refers to those who, because they have not accumulated merit in the past, uncontrollably generate afflictions, like King Asanga. Or like someone who, when given meat to appease their anger, throws away the meat along with the container, saying, 'I am still angry!' Sin refers to the five heinous crimes, broken vows, misappropriation of monastic property, and so on. Oppressed by intense suffering refers to those afflicted with leprosy or severe illness, and so on. Some people do not even want to look at these individuals, saying, 'Never let them come near,' and treat them as enemies. But this is not the case; those who are in suffering should be pitied, like prisoners being led by the king's executioner. Even if you see them behaving improperly, you should shed tears and think, 'What will become of these people!' Therefore, first, advise them with words. If they do not listen, help them with food and wealth, and prevent them from doing evil. If that is not helpful, then help them silently in your heart, while also being careful not to be harmed yourself. Some people cover their noses and avoid those who are oppressed by intense suffering, thinking that helping them will not benefit them but will instead cause them harm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
