Collection of Teachings on Mind Training LJ30 The Eight Verses on Mind Training with History 1-284 ༄༅། །The Eight Verses on Mind Training with History. ༄། །Verse One. The Eight Verses on Mind Training with History. I prostrate to the holy lamas! Geshe Chekhawa said: 'My faith in the Kadampa tradition arose when I first heard these eight verses from Master Chakshingwa. Then, during the time of Lungshö Gegongba, I cut this verse into strips and contemplated each line repeatedly, but no realization truly arose. If it did arise, it must have been a different realization.' He said: 'Initially, when traveling, fearing the appearance of enemies, remembering this verse was helpful. Later, the mind became wild, requiring housing for people, but suitable housing could not be found, and suffering from the contempt of others, etc., all these unbearable things were helped by these verses.' He said, these are the eight verses: 'May I cherish all sentient beings, more than a wish-fulfilling jewel, with the intention to accomplish the highest purpose, may I always hold them dear.' In general, cherishing all sentient beings more than a wish-fulfilling jewel means that sentient beings and wish-fulfilling jewels are similar, having two qualities. If a wish-fulfilling jewel is placed in mud, it cannot even remove the mud itself, 1-285 on the fifteenth of the month, it is bathed with fragrant water, hung on the top of a victory banner, and offered, then all the needs and desires of Jambudvipa will be fulfilled. Similarly, sentient beings in samsara, although filled with various faults, cannot free themselves from it, cannot eliminate suffering and its causes, but if one benefits them, all temporary and ultimate benefits will arise. Temporary happiness, if there are no sentient beings, from where can it be sought? Ultimate happiness also arises dependent on sentient beings. It is precisely dependent on sentient beings that one attains the unsurpassed state of Buddhahood.' Verse Two. Second, specifically, 'Wherever I associate with anyone, may I view myself as the lowest of all, and from the depths of my heart, cherish others, practicing with reverence.' Wherever one stays, with whomever one associates, in all circumstances, one should view oneself as inferior and from the depths of one's heart, respect others. Those one associates with, higher than oneself are lamas, equal to oneself are dharma friends, and lower than oneself are beggars, etc. In all circumstances, lineage, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the perspective of the power and faults of my mind, I regard myself as inferior. One should not be proud of one's lineage. Because all of these are inferior butcher lineages. Being proud of the body, the golden color is ugly, and the behavior is not even worthy of being watched. From the power of the mind, all of us are ugly, and if we are proud of knowledge, then we do not know even one aspect of the five sciences (Shastra, craftsmanship, medicine, logic, inner science), and even if we listen a little, there are omissions in the meaning of the words we hear, but we do not know it ourselves. In terms of behavior, although we temporarily pretend to be practitioners, we have not done fewer bad deeds, and even now, thoughts arise in the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, and most of the actions of body and speech are impure, so it is difficult to attain even a higher realm in the next life. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'With such conduct of mine, I will not even obtain a human body. If I do not obtain a human body, what good is there, only evil?' One should contemplate all of one's faults, break the arrogance of thinking 'I think there are no beings more inferior than me,' and learn to respect others. That is to say, seeing the real qualities of others, such as lineage, appearance, wealth, and the qualities of the six perfections such as generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, one does not look at the faults, and thinks: 'It is wonderful to have such qualities!' If there are actually no qualities, then think: 'What qualities are there in these people, I don't know.' Then tell the story of the ugly Ajara. 'From the depths of the marrow' means that this thought is not just lip service, but to treat all beings with sincerity. If you have this thought, then the Holy Avalokiteshvara will also say: 'Well done, well done, son of good family!' The reason for this is that just as the ocean accommodates all things and all the water flows into it, in the continuum without arrogance, transcendental qualities will arise. The *Compendium of Trainings* says: 'One should abide as a servant to all beings.' The meaning of the three baskets (Tripitaka) is also to subdue arrogance. If there is arrogance, there will be discord with others in this life, and the faults of the next life are: 'The ignorant, dominated by arrogance, will fall into evil realms and unfavorable places, will be reborn into poor and lowly lineages, and will become blind, weak, and ugly.' The habitual tendencies of afflictions will become heavier and heavier, and in all inferior environments, strong afflictions will arise, and therefore one will not attain ultimate enlightenment. A Bodhisattva with arrogance, towards enlightenment... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
