Mind Training Collection LJ8: 'Subduing Poison with Peacocks' 1-150 'Subduing Poison with Peacocks: A Mind Training' Chapter One: Taking Poison as Nectar Herein lies 'Subduing Poison with Peacocks: A Mind Training'. Named 'Peacocks Roaming in a Forest of Potent Poison'. Homage to the Venerable Lord of Death. As a prince has already delivered all, as sons and daughters bestow the kingdom, to wealth and retinues that are exceedingly cherished, one should give them away completely without reservation. As a prince has become a great hero, as a tigress nourishes herself with her own flesh, to this illusory body that is exceedingly cherished, one should joyfully give it to the hordes of flesh-eaters. As a king has become the strength of loving-kindness, as a yaksha nourishes himself with his own blood, to those who drink blood, one should lovingly give this warm heart's blood that is difficult to sever. As the son of a merchant draws water into the fields, as reciting the names of the Sugatas draws in the fish, to all beings who are impoverished in the Dharma, one should bestow the gift of the sacred Dharma. As a prince has become a great spiritual teacher, as one endures the evil views of a wicked teacher with compassion, to the wicked and unruly habits of one's retinue, one should cherish them especially with great compassion. As a Bodhisattva has become a monkey, as one draws sinners from the well, even if one cannot accommodate helping the wicked, one should lead them with compassion that does not desire a good return. 1-151 Alas! There is no one who has not been a mother. In the realm of samsara, there is not a moment of happiness. Returning evil for evil is like a rabbit's horn. Now, if one does not respectfully take up this heroic conduct of the Great Sage, and does not generate an antidote, then the practice of a hero will be impossible. Therefore, one should exert oneself with diligence, staking one's life. After the Sugata demonstrated the manner of passing away, those who wish to emulate his conduct, if they do not integrate such practices into their being, there is a risk that the happiness of beings will be exhausted. Therefore, whatever the circumstances, one should exert oneself with diligence, staking one's life on this joyous Dharma of heroes. This is the practice of a hero, the first chapter, taking poison as nectar. Chapter Two: Taking Poison as Nectar Named 'Peacocks Roaming in a Forest of Potent Poison'. Homage to the Venerable Lord of Death. Listeners to this Dharma, and all heroes seeking truth, in the forest of samsara, the peacock is beautiful, at the foot of the tree of the five poisons, one does not feel aversion to the medicine that is nourished by poison. Attachment is the poisonous water of karma -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- འཁོལ་མ་ལ། །

In a secluded place: If you do not restrain your desires, you may be misled by those with desires; the poison of desire must be eradicated. When the fire of hatred blazes, if you do not show the wrathful appearance of Yama's messenger, you may be obstructed by those with hatred; the enemy of hatred must be vanquished. If the mud of ignorance is mixed with filth, if you do not cultivate patience like a corpse, you may accumulate evil deeds by wicked people; the thought of ignorance must be cultivated with equanimity. When the tree of jealousy grows luxuriantly, if you do not distinguish between yourself and others, inside and out, the Dharma may be destroyed by heretics and others; therefore, the thought of jealousy must be guarded by the Dharma. When the tree of pride blazes, if you do not confront it with pride, you may be deceived by the hordes of demons; therefore, you must protect the Buddha's teachings and subdue the heretics. Thus, all the armies of poison are unreal, empty, and illusory; gather the bonds of ego tightly and devour them like a peacock. Even if you can show all things in the minds of others, do not lose your steadfastness in the fundamental antidotes; take and abandon good and evil at the cost of your life; even if you encounter suffering, you should gladly accept Bodhi. Thus, even if you are proficient in all knowledge, if you do not abandon your own happiness, you may be contaminated by gain and generate greed and hatred; therefore, you should strike selfish thoughts like beating a dog thief. If you do not associate with wise people and do not study the scriptures diligently, you may falsely slander wise people; therefore, you must be proficient in all knowledge. Even if you suffer day and night, if you do not think about the faults of samsara, you may still enter the cause of suffering; therefore, you must remember the faults of karma. Even so, you should use unpleasant suffering as an antidote to destroy ego-grasping; even if there are billions of demonic armies as enemies, you should abandon the fear of 'I'. Even if you fall into evil realms for the sake of others, you should rejoice because you have no regrets; even if your breath is taken by the executioner, you should not perform rituals that benefit yourself. Even if you have to bear the evil karma of all sentient beings, you should reduce the complaints of suffering by bearing the burden; even if an infectious disease attacks your body, you should not take the wrong path because of your own faults. Thus, if unpleasant things do not befall you, it will never be possible to enter the desired state. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
