Ancient Sakya Scholars' Teachings KH25 - Summary of Philosophical Tenets 5-282 Summary of Philosophical Tenets Collection of Summaries of Philosophical Tenets Oṃ Svasti Siddhaṃ (藏文:ཨོཾ་སྭསྟི་སིདྡྷཾ།,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ svasti siddhaṃ,汉语字面意思:Om, may there be well-being, accomplishment!). I respectfully prostrate at the feet of the holy Lama. The teachings of the inner Buddhist doctrine are definitely those of the Sūtra and Tantra schools. There are four schools that expound the Sūtra: The first is the Vaibhāṣika (说一切有部) school's view: The five bases to be known are: form, mind, mental factors, non-associated compositional factors, and unconditioned elements. The first four are impermanent substances, and the last one is a permanent substance. Regarding the desire realm, there are eight substances of subtle particles without sense organs and without sound. Those with body sense have nine substances, those with other senses have ten substances, and those with sound have eleven. Regarding the form realm, there are six substances of subtle particles without sense organs and without sound. Those with body sense have seven substances, and those with other sense organs have eight substances. Form is the five sense organs and the five objects, as well as non-revealing form. Touch is of twelve natures. Non-revealing forms are said to be three: vows, non-vows, and others. Similarly, there are also meditative stabilizations and the uncontaminated. Aggregates, sources, elements, along with their definitions and classifications. Chief mind, intellect, and consciousness are the same in meaning, only different in name. There are six types of consciousness: apprehending, holding, simultaneous, contact, holding. There are fifty-one mental factors: five omnipresent, five object-specific. 5-283 Ten virtuous, six major afflictions, two non-virtuous. Ten minor afflictions, eight uncertain, non-ignorance, view. Non-wisdom, forgetfulness, and distraction. Non-associated compositional factors are: attainment, non-attainment, commonality. Non-perception meditation and meditative absorptions, etc., are nine types. Life force and characteristics, as well as collections of names, etc. Unconditioned elements are space, as well as analytical cessation and non-analytical cessation. The classification of the two truths is: if by destruction and wisdom, others are removed, then wisdom does not enter, like water in a vase, it is conventionally existent, but the ultimate existent is different. Thus, the five bases of knowable things are considered to be real and truly existent. The three unconditioned elements are permanent substances, and all conditioned phenomena are categorized by the three times. The three times are considered to be truly existent. Then, the way the path arises: the noble family without attachment, of which three are the nature of contentment. Those who abide in discipline, listening, and meditation should diligently practice. The way of practice is calm abiding and insight. The path of accumulation has three types: small, medium, and large. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, cultivate the four applications of mindfulness, the four right abandonments, and the four legs of magical power. In the heat and peak stages of the path of joining, cultivate the five faculties; in the forbearance and supreme mundane dharma stages, cultivate the five powers. In the paths of seeing and cultivation, cultivate the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eight branches of the noble path. The path of seeing has sixteen moments; the path of cultivation has two types. The path of no more learning possesses ten branches. Among the Hearers, the diligent one quickly attains the result in three lifetimes; the lazy one is uncertain. The Pratyekabuddha, like a rhinoceros, practices alone for a hundred eons. The sharp-witted one attains quickly, while the middling and dull-witted ones are slower. If practicing in a sangha, one can choose the appropriate method. Buddhas require three countless eons. Among the Hearers, there are also those who arise as noble ones and ordinary beings. The former follow faith and follow the Dharma. The noble ones have eight abodes of fruition. They can be divided into three and ten. In terms of how they are attained, the paths of seeing and cultivation each have seven. Arhats have ten. The qualities of the Buddha include unshared qualities and qualities shared with others. The former includes the eighteen unshared qualities, possessing the perfections of equality and inequality. The latter, the shared qualities, include: being without afflictions, knowing what is desired, the four analytical understandings, the five superknowledges, these are shared with the Hearers. The five superknowledges, the four concentrations, the four immeasurables, the eight liberations, the eight mastery states, the ten pervasive spheres, etc., these are shared with the world. To understand the tenets of the Vaibhashika school in detail, one can learn from the treatise *Abhidharma-kosa*. This is the summary of the tenets of the Vaibhashika school, the first part. Part Two: Summary of the Tenets of the Sautrantika School The tenets of the Sautrantika school are: following the scriptures and reasoning. Refuting the Vaibhashika school and stating its own views. The Vaibhashika school mainly relies on treatises, because they do not respect the Buddha, and believe that the treatises themselves, are more reliable than the Buddha's words; otherwise, the treatises would become meaningless. The Buddha's words have six certainties. Non-revealing form, non-associated formations, unconditioned phenomena, if they exist as substantial entities, they are easily destroyed. Unassembled atoms would cause defects in the body. If the three times exist as substantial entities, then the past and future would become the present. If consciousness has no self-nature and only grasps external objects, it would be impossible to distinguish the differences between blue, etc. If there is no self-awareness, then from memory, the view that the self exists would be harmed. The self-view is explained according to the scriptures, the scriptures include the twelve branches of teachings: sutra, geya, vyakarana, gatha, udana, nidana, avadana, itivrttaka, jataka extensively explained, vaipulya, adbhuta-dharma, and avavad. Non-revealing form, non-associated formations, unconditioned phenomena, are not considered to exist as substantial entities.
