Collection of Instructions from Ancient Sakya Scholars KH9 - The Presentation of Grounds and Paths. The Presentation of Grounds and Paths. ༄། །General Presentation. The Presentation of Grounds and Paths, called 'Sunlight Illuminating the Intention'. Om Svasti! The Presentation of Grounds and Paths, called 'Sunlight Illuminating the Intention'. I prostrate to the Lama and the Yidam! The crystal of bliss, adorned with the splendor of marks and signs, The three rivers flowing from the matted hair, surpassing coolness, the sixty melodies. The powerful wisdom mind from the three-tiered burning wrathful eye. To the Lama and the God of Gods, I prostrate! Who bestows wisdom and ability upon the wise, And upon the intermediate ones, possesses the eye of good explanation. The supreme dispeller of the darkness of ignorance in the minds of the deluded. I shall write 'Sunlight Illuminating the Intention' on the Presentation of Grounds and Paths. This has three parts: the general presentation, the explanation of the grounds and paths themselves, and the presentation of the resulting fruit. Firstly, in general, beings are of three types: those who desire existence (samsara), those who desire to be free from it, and those who desire neither. The first are the materialists and those who assert nihilistic views, etc. These beings, in the three realms and nine grounds, have only the paths of the lower realms and the paths of the higher realms. Since the result of wrong views is definitely the lower realms. 2-714 The second are the Jains and those who abide in the lower tenets of their own schools. These beings strive for the means to exhaust existence, but because their views are impure, they can only attain higher realms, not definite goodness. Furthermore, the Hearers (Shravakas) and Solitary Buddhas (Pratyekabuddhas) also desire to be free from existence because they lack skillful means, but they do not abide in the extremes of existence and peace. The third is the Great Vehicle (Mahayana): with the wisdom that realizes selflessness, they do not desire existence, and with skillful means, such as the mind of enlightenment, love, and great compassion, they do not abide in nirvana either. As stated in the Ornament (Abhisamayalankara): 'Not in the extreme of discipline, not in the other extreme.' And in the Clear Exposition (Prasannapada): 'The compassion of the Bodhisattva delights in existence, but the wisdom does not abide in existence.' Thus, beings are of three types. The first does not actually enter the Dharma. The second and third are the beginning of entering the Dharma, first with faith, then relying on a virtuous friend to attain higher states, and upon that, relying on the correct view. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely excellent three Bodhis (two), Moreover, one attains perfect enlightenment by relying on skillful means. As stated in the 'Ratnavali': 'Only the faithful rely on the Dharma, the wise rely on right reasoning, among these two, wisdom is the main one, its precursor is faith.' Also: 'Generosity, ethics, benefiting others, patience, diligence, these are the basis or the cause of liberation through wisdom, the meaning of the Great Vehicle is summarized.' The basis of birth Secondly, explaining the actual stages and paths that are relevant. This is divided into the basis of birth, and the actual explanation of the nature of the stages and paths that arise from it. Firstly, the basis is divided into the physical basis and the mental basis. The first, by one's own power, one is not newly born in the three lower realms or in places without joy, because one possesses a great deal of karmic obscuration. One is also not born as a eunuch or hermaphrodite, because one cannot practice the wisdom that individually counteracts them. Because one possesses a great deal of karmic obscuration, one is also not born as one who has committed the five heinous crimes. One is also not directly born in the higher realms, because the continuum is occupied by the distraction of meditative absorption, and there is no space. Those who are already born are known to exist in all of these. By the power of others, one is also born in all of these. As stated in the 'Wheel of Existence Sutra', the noble Avalokiteśvara placed many hungry ghosts in a place where they could see the truth. Also, as stated in the 'White Lotus Sutra', twenty-one thousand nagas generated the supreme mind of enlightenment. Also, as stated in the 'Perfection of Wisdom Sutra', many sons of gods in the form realm and formless realm also generated the mind of enlightenment. Secondly, regarding the mental basis, those above the path of seeing must rely on the access concentration of the first dhyana, the actual basis of the first dhyana (just this) and the two special ones, the second dhyana, the third dhyana, the actual basis of the fourth dhyana, i.e., the six dhyana grounds, and the first three of the formless realm, i.e., one must rely on any of the nine uncontaminated grounds. Because when abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing, one must unite the special śamatha and vipaśyanā, i.e., perfecting the nine methods of abiding in the mind, and the special vipaśyanā that realizes selflessness. As stated in the 'Bodhicaryāvatāra': 'With the power of śamatha and vipaśyanā, one can completely destroy afflictions, knowing this, first seek śamatha, śamatha is achieved by detachment, in a world without distraction, no one can achieve śamatha.' The paths of accumulation and preparation are initially in the desire realm and the form realm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
