When death comes, the external sign is illness, and the internal sign is death. At that time, how does the Prajnaparamita luminous Dharmakaya appear? To transform this appearance into the path, one needs to go through three stages: preparation, main practice, and conclusion. First, in the common preliminary stage, one should rely on the teachings of a lama or a virtuous friend who can heal afflictions. At the same time, one should avoid the causes of distraction and dullness, accumulate resources and objects, display the thangka of the yidam, prepare offerings, and so on. Meditate on all dharmas as dreamlike illusions. One should develop a firm conviction in the dreamlike nature of things, thinking, 'What I think and imagine cannot be truly real.' In the preparation stage, one should make the aspiration: 'I must attain the luminous Dharmakaya!' If one fails to attain it, one should also recognize in the bardo stage that the illusory body is indeed illusory, and repeatedly practice this recognition. Then, visualize oneself as the yidam deity and focus the mind on the experiences of the completion stage, such as tummo. In the main practice stage, by meditating on luminosity, just as water droplets merge with water droplets, and the mother and son luminosities meet, the unconditioned awareness meets with the fundamental wisdom, experiencing the self-arisen luminosity and merging with the luminosity of the bardo. Afterwards, in the concluding stage, one can attain the Prajnaparamita luminous Dharmakaya at the time of death. If one fails to attain it, in the intermediate state, the illusory body will remain for seven days or seven weeks. Every seven days, a natural luminosity will appear. If at that time, one cannot recognize the luminosity and the illusory body, one will wander in the three realms. The yogi, by the power of previous training, will be able to generate the realization of recognizing the luminosity and the illusory body at that time. By this power, and the good foundation of the body, one can attain the state of coemergent Vajradhara. The nail (藏文:གཟེར་,梵文天城体:अथि,梵文罗马拟音:athi,汉语字面意思:nail) of taking death as an aid to the path.
