MARPA21 Teachings of Marpa - Balancing the Four Elements 2-1-59b ༄༅། །Balancing the Four Elements. The Practice of Balancing the Four Elements. To the Lama and the Mandala of Deities, I prostrate with devotion for blessings. For the sake of practitioners on the Secret Mantra path, I write down the sequential instructions for removing obstacles in meditation. In the lineage of the faithful, the lineage of the Guru is: Jowo Tilopa, who requested it through twelve years of hardship. He was an Indian Pandit who requested instructions from Tilopa. Jowo Tilopa said: 'Nāropa, who possesses unfailing memory, pleased me for twelve years. Hundreds of thousands of emanations appeared. I conversed with the Victorious Śākyamuni, Āryadeva, Nāgārjuna, and other saints. He alone possesses my realization. Future aspirants who seek the path, should pay homage to him if they desire realization.' Having said this, Tilopa vanished. Thus, Tilopa's disciple was Nāropa, Nāropa's disciple was Marpa Lotsawa, and Marpa's disciple was Lama Gungpa. Nāropa and above are equal to the Buddha. In balancing the four elements, one should have faith, respect, and the power of trust. For the balance of meditative power, the object of meditation should be extremely clear. Aim straight at the target like an arrow, rotate through the four wheels, and grasp firmly at the navel like an iron hook. Expand the body as vast as the sky. If feeling stiff, press down with the Lion's Release Mudra, and in the wind [outward. Forms, etc. To. Great bliss, etc. From here.], when the time is right, release the winds and bindu, then consciousness [Meditate on the Vajra Jewel emptiness.] 2-1-60b Place it in the release point. If the air rises from below and cannot be controlled, then perform the Lion's Stretching posture. In the center of the Vajra, balance with the kapāla (skull cup). If drowsy, tighten the lower wind, mix the wind and consciousness, and throw it into the expanse of the sky. If feeling unsteady, hide in the illusory mandala. [Increase joy, sway left and right.] If not controlled, then in the state of emptiness, relax comfortably with the instruction of consciousness riding the wind. If unclear, then relax in bliss. Rotate through the four wheels. Do not eat unsuitable foods. Because of cold and mucus increase, do not drink vegetable juice. Because of the body's decay, do not drink alcohol. Balance with conduct. Diagnosing illness: If the earth element is too heavy, the body is heavy and makes a heavy sound. One feels the body is growing larger. One feels like lying on one's back. Appetite is small. If the water element is too heavy, one is thirsty, the body is cold, and one longs for possessions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, when awareness arises [such as great bliss], the component of happiness is small. Bindu drips, giving happiness is short-lived. If the fire element is large, the body trembles internally, the mouth and nose are dry, the eyes are astringent, and sweat-like fluid emerges from the armpits. One feels as if the bindu is dripping, and as if the vajra is about to break. If the wind element is large, the body trembles and shakes, one likes to talk, likes to argue, sexual ability decreases, a whooshing sound comes from the mouth, and the joints feel as if they are being pierced by stakes. If on the eighth day, the kidneys and waist feel uncomfortable, then, in this way, understand the diseases of the four elements, and the method of treatment is to greatly increase the power of reverence and the power of faith [in all dharmas]. Regarding this, if the earth element is large, visualize the mudra consort, and place awareness in the wheel of emanation. If this does not help, place it in the wheel of great bliss. If this does not help, straighten like an arrow, exhale wind and consciousness from the nostrils, and send it far away, about a yojana or a krosha. [If one unites with the emptiness mother, think that happiness will arise.] Again, grasp like an iron hook, inhale wind and consciousness from the nostrils, and place it in the wheel of great bliss. Eat coarse food, and rest after meals. If the water element is large, put fire into the water, and draw upwards from the wheel of emanation. From the mouth of the rakshasi, in the form of the seed syllable (藏文ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体 हूँ,梵文罗马拟音 hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), like the tip of a flame, burning with the width of a hair, warm the body. Fill the four wheels with bindu, close the mouth of the rakshasi, and place awareness in the throat. There is no burning flame, completely expel it, and give nutritious food. If the fire element is large, pour water into the fire. One should repeatedly remember the mudra consort, make the body as vast as the sky, raise the bindu upwards, and hold awareness in the heart. If this does not help, let the bindu descend from the crown of the head and wash the four wheels. [Same as above.] Rely on cooling food, and bathe with cold water. If the wind element is large, put earth into the wind, and clap the palms at the crown of the head and other root places, place the bindu in the secret place, rest in the center of the intestines, and grasp the veins and wind in the perineum like an iron hook. Reside together with a mudra consort who has signs, do not look far away, do not chatter about coarse and fine matters, and control the conduct of the body. If this does not help, change the actual or imagined mudra consort. [If one is a person with desire,] when not meditating, visualize clear light. Place awareness in the armpit and raise it as vast as the sky. Eat oily food. If the fire and water elements are large during union, suppress from above. If the earth and wind elements are large, unite from below. This should be applied universally. Put wind into the earth, release from the wind, put fire into the water, pour water into the fire, and give to the wind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
