This is about attaining Buddhahood in this life and for the lazy to attain Buddhahood in the bardo (intermediate state). First, experience the luminosity during sleep. To do this, in a room that pleases the mind, display a thangka (scroll painting) of your personal deity (yi dam, इष्टदेवता, iṣṭadevatā, personal tutelary deity), sit comfortably on your seat, and visualize the deity's form. Then, clearly observe the deity in front of you, and also visualize yourself as clear. Combine both with the experience of luminosity from the previous night, and repeatedly practice and visualize. [If drowsiness or distraction occurs, visualize the deity thangka and enhance it with luminosity.] As you fall asleep, generate the realization of luminosity in your mindstream. As you wake up, visualize as before, and after about an hour, both yourself and the deity in front of you will appear as the realization of luminosity. Then, enhance and visualize everything you see with your eyes, etc., with luminosity and emptiness. After some time, without effort, the realization of luminosity will suddenly arise. At that time, a prophecy from the dakinis (डाकिनी, ḍākinī, female deities) will occur, and they will guide you to practice mudra (मुद्रा, mudrā, symbolic gestures). By practicing for one day, you will subdue the maras (demons) in the evening and attain perfect enlightenment (samyaksaṃbuddha, सम्यक्सम्बुद्ध, samyaksaṃbuddha, fully awakened Buddha) at dawn. This is related to the second part of the subsequent chapter. Other: Mudra of physical action. Regarding the lazy attaining Buddhahood in the bardo, combine it with the luminosity of death. Even if you experience luminosity during sleep, but are distracted by work during the day and cannot visualize, first, repeatedly generate the thought 'I am about to die.' Then, repeatedly generate the thought 'I will seize the luminosity at the time of death.' Next, at the time of death, the elements gradually dissolve: earth into water, water into fire, fire into wind, wind into consciousness, consciousness into gross appearance, gross into subtle, subtle into very subtle, and finally into the luminosity of emptiness. At this time, you will experience the suchness (dharmata, धर्मता, dharmatā, the nature of things) of reality. By the power of previous experience, if you recognize this as luminosity, you will attain the fruit of the dharmakaya (धर्मकाय, dharmakāya, the body of dharma) at that very moment. Afterwards, for the benefit of body and mind, you can choose a body at will. Otherwise, it is impossible to enter the womb and take birth. All sentient beings experience the dharmakaya of luminosity and emptiness at the time of death, but because they fail to recognize it, they wander in samsara (cyclic existence) and take birth. If you recognize it at that time, that alone is sufficient. This is the oral instruction (man ngag, उपदेश, upadeśa, teaching) of luminosity, the essence of personal practice. Ah! The guru's oral instruction is like a treasure trove, the essence of the heart. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
