Homage to the precious and venerable Lamas! From the very nature of immeasurable Bodhicitta, Acting for the benefit of beings through supreme blessings, Having become victorious through maturation and liberation by Vajrayana, I bow to the feet of the supreme Marpa Lotsawa. An emanation of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, The great master Ḍoṃ bhi he ru kar, who attained the supreme siddhi of Mahamudra, Came to the northern land of snow to tame the sentient beings of the degenerate age, Because the time had come to tame them through the Great Vehicle of Unsurpassed Secret. Thus, the venerable Marpa Lotsawa, This kind and compassionate one of definitive meaning, Of his immeasurable biographies, Here, I will briefly explain eight aspects: 1-1-84a First, the merit of awakening the lineage and going to India; second, the merit of exhausting difficult practices; third, the merit of Jetsun Naropa's prophecy of the spontaneous accomplishment of the Whispered Lineage; fourth, the merit of prophesying the use of Sutra and Tantra as methods; fifth, the merit of relying on the Lama Buddha and being renowned in the root of the lineage; sixth, the merit of recognizing Mahamudra through the glory of blessings; seventh, the merit of gaining mastery over the mind and the unobstructed arising of the appearances of the Samadhi of empowerment; and eighth, the merit of mastering consciousness transference through the skill of the channels and winds. Among these, the first, the merit of awakening the lineage and going to India, is as follows: His birthplace was Chungkhyer in Lhodrak, and his family was the landowners of Pesal. His grandfather was the wealthy Konchok. His father was named Marton Wangchuk Özer, and his mother was named Gyamo Öde. He was born as their son and was very wealthy, possessing two or three regions. It is said that when Marpa was young, he liked to drink and fight with everyone. Therefore, his father thought that if he sent him to study, he might become peaceful. So he sent him to Tsangla Tömakar Myugulung, where Lama Drokmi Lotsawa had just returned from India. He requested teachings from him at the same time. He needed offerings and a tsokhor for each practice of Hevajra. Then Marpa thought, 'Instead of working so hard here, I might as well go to Nepal.' 1-1-84b There, in an instant. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He received teachings, transformed all conditions into gold, and then went to Klog skya ston pa can in La-stod dgyer phu. After that, he went to southern Nepal and met Lama Pham 'thing ba, where he heard many teachings such as the Four Vajra Seats (rDo rje gdan bzhi) and Hevajra (dGyes mdzad). He met Lama Penda wa (Bla ma dpen da ba) and requested many teachings. After staying there for three years, he returned to Tibet and encountered people transporting provisions in Mang yul. He went there and offered five srangs of gold to Lama Penda wa, who was very pleased and said, 'I have a master in India who is like a second Buddha, you should bring him here.' So, he underwent unimaginable hardships and went to India, where he met the four great paṇḍitas of Vikramaśīla and Nālandā, who guarded the four gates: Shāntipa at the east gate, Vāgīśvarakīrti at the south gate, Śeṣa-rab 'byung gnas sbas pa at the west gate, and Pu la ha ri at the north gate. When asked which of these paṇḍitas was the greatest, they said, 'No one can compare to Je Naropa.' So, he went to Pu la ha ri and offered a gold nugget to Je Naropa, requesting teachings. It is said that the venerable one immediately asked his name and was very pleased. There, he received initiation and blessings, and for six years he heard many teachings on Mahāmudrā and the tantric father and mother tantras. At that time, Princess Mandarava (mNga' bdag rgyal sras me dri ba) was living on a mountain peak that burned like fire on the banks of the Ganges (Gha ga) River, and he went to her and heard many pith instructions on the Seven Accomplished Ones (grub pa sde bdun) and the Essence Cycle (snying po'i skor). In the west, at La khe trar, he requested many sacred teachings on Svātantrika Madhyamaka from the master called 'Essence of Wisdom' (ye shes snying po). In addition, he relied on many masters such as Lama Shri Singha (dPal sing gha gling pa), both the elder and younger Kusulupa. At that time, Marpa thought, 'Now I should return to Tibet, find more gold, and make offerings to the sacred places such as the glorious Vajra Seat (dPal rdo rje gdan), and I must also hold gaṇacakras for these accomplished masters and offer gold, etc.' So, he returned to Tibet and sang the Dohāvajra song (rDo ha rdo rje'i mgur) at Glog skya ston pa can in La-stod dgyer phu. After that, he went to his homeland and searched for gold in the north, as far as northern Nagsho (Byang nags shod). In Dar yul, 'Phan yul, etc., he met Marpa Go Lek, who had come to trade, and brought him to Tsam klungs. There, he gave Marpa Go Lek two hundred srangs of gold... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
