The Code of Conduct for the Practitioners of Palpung Yangthang Kunsang Dechen Ösal Ling: A Clear Exposition of What to Adopt and Abandon, the Source of Benefit and Happiness. The Code of Conduct for the Practitioners of Palpung Yangthang Kunsang Dechen Ösal Ling: A Clear Exposition of What to Adopt and Abandon, the Source of Benefit and Happiness. Herein lies the text entitled "The Code of Conduct for the Practitioners of Palpung Yangthang Kunsang Dechen Ösal Ling: A Clear Exposition of What to Adopt and Abandon, the Source of Benefit and Happiness." Oṃ Svasti Siddhaṃ Śrī Jāya Tiṣṭhantu. Om, may there be well-being, accomplishment, glory, victory, and stability.) The body of marks and signs blazing with the glory of existence and peace, The speech of Brahma, the source of all the vast array of Dharma doors, The mind of non-conceptual wisdom pervading the sky, To the venerable lama, the master of the three secrets, I pay homage. The lifeblood of the practice lineage's teachings, Palpung, The renunciates devoted to practice in the solitary retreat, The rules established for all that will arise in the future, I will explain the source of benefit and happiness, clearly distinguishing what to adopt and abandon. Thereupon, having accumulated a vast collection of merit in previous lifetimes and relying on the power of pure aspirations, one obtains the excellent support of leisure and opportunity, which is superior to a wish-fulfilling jewel. One encounters the innermost essence of the Buddha's teachings, the Secret Mantra Vajrayana. One has the opportunity to rely on virtuous spiritual friends who possess the qualities and lineage as one desires. Having gathered the conducive conditions for practicing the sacred Dharma, one is able to make practice the essence, just like a poor person finding a wish-fulfilling jewel in a dream. Although one has obtained such a rare Dharma, if one merely harbors superficial intentions and spends years in a retreat center just to fulfill the required time, without pure intention and qualified practice, one deceives the patrons who provide the resources. The practitioner themselves will miss the ultimate goal of liberation in all lifetimes. Therefore, the fundamental basis must be pleasing. The fundamental basis is that those who reside in practice must have unwavering faith in the three vows, have attended the summer retreat, and have some understanding of the sutras and tantras. In particular, they must have a definite aspiration to practice for future lives and for liberation and enlightenment. If one places anyone who comes along without examination, nothing will come of it except wasted resources. Therefore, one must examine them thoroughly before placing them. When entering practice, one must first correct one's intention,

Therefore, it is essential to have a good foundation at the beginning, to experience the three aspects of view, meditation, and conduct in the middle, satisfying others, and ultimately ensuring that the fruits of practice are not wasted, bringing joy to one's own mind. This is the general summary of the precepts. So, how can one ensure that the aspiration is not inverted from the outset? The Sutra of the Heap of Jewels states: 'Kashyapa, if any monks wish to go to a solitary place, they should contemplate eight dharmas in their minds. What are the eight? They should think: I shall completely abandon my body; I shall completely abandon my life; I shall abandon all reverence; I shall abandon all attachment and desire; I shall live in the wilderness like a wild animal; I shall learn the conduct of dwelling in solitude; I shall live by the Dharma and not by afflictions.' These are called the eight dharmas. Monks, whoever dwells in solitude should remember these dharmas and then dwell in solitude.' Thus it is said in the sutra. In short, one must cast aside all worldly affairs and enter into practice with the aspiration to attain unsurpassed great enlightenment. Chöje Jigten Sumgön said: 'All dependent origination relies on the mind of enlightenment, so it is very important to be extremely careful. When going to the mountains, one must have a mind of enlightenment that is unmixed with other thoughts. If one goes to the mountains because of friends or to belittle others, then no wishes will be fulfilled. Like a dog drinking water, one will only become worse. If one is controlled by others, or goes to the mountains with thoughts of food, wealth, and desire, then one's own vows will be lost, one will accumulate the sins of others, and cause others to lose faith. If one goes to the mountains with hatred, then everyone will hate oneself, and one will be subject to slander and so on. If one goes to the mountains with pride, then no qualities will arise in one's own being. If one goes to the mountains with attachment to food and clothing, then one will lack food and clothing and lose what one already has. If one goes to the mountains with a mind only for oneself, then it is like the Hearer Vehicle, and no benefit for oneself or others will arise. If one does not understand the causes and faults of these factors, but goes to the mountains out of ignorance, then virtuous actions will not increase, no achievements will be made, and there will be nine kinds of negative consequences.'
