The Fourth Chapter of Well-Spoken Instructions The Fourth Chapter of Well-Spoken Instructions The Fourth Chapter of Well-Spoken Instructions is complete. The nectar of well-spoken instructions arises from the all-knowing Buddhas. Because what they say is valid in every way, it should be practiced first. This leisure and opportunity is difficult to obtain, and therefore it is difficult to encounter the Dharma. Even just hearing the names of the Three Jewels makes samsara finite. Always take refuge in the Three Jewels, and cultivate heartfelt faith. This is the root of the Dharma. Most refuge is just words, and few have faith in the Three Jewels. Therefore, whatever virtue is accomplished is only exhausted in the happiness of higher realms. When one's own bad karma ripens, some small-minded people have wrong views. The karma that cuts off beginningless roots of virtue should be abandoned like poison. All who are born will die, do not think that you yourself will not die. That power is not under your own control. If you do not become afraid when you die, that mind is the same as an animal's, what reliance does it have? The time of death is not fixed, and there is no knowing when the Lord of Death will come. Since the Dharma will help at the time of death, you should quickly strive to practice the Dharma. The sublime Dharma is what the Victorious Ones have spoken, practice that. Practices that do not accord with the sutras and tantras are the cause of wasting one's life. Among animals, the elephant; among flowers, the white lotus; among thoughts, impermanence is supreme, as taught by the chief of the two-legged. In these degenerate times, life is very short, it is spent quickly like the winter sun. Children, wealth, houses, and homes are left behind, naked and empty-handed, one goes alone to the next world. Practicing sin for the sake of those things, one destroys oneself with its ripening. If you remember impermanence, you will remember what is unnecessary. Because of that, you will turn your mind away from this life, and whatever you do will accord with the Dharma. Practicing Dharma in order to accomplish health, long life, wealth, etc., is like exchanging a jewel for flour. The roots of virtue are exhausted in small results. Power, wealth, dominion, fame, etc., are the results of accumulating pure virtue in previous lives. If you have merit, they will arise naturally, but even if you strive, it is difficult to accomplish. When the force of virtue is exhausted, those things vanish like a dream. Not to mention the next world, even in this very moment it is like that.

There will be no benefit. Therefore, if you want to be perfect, just like wanting crops, you should be like seeds, diligent in generosity and other good deeds. Why talk about the next life when doing good deeds? There will be obvious benefits in this life as well. Because one's own mind is not concealed, one must control one's own foundation. I do not have the five eyes, and I am humble because I think I do not know, and do not grasp the foundation of others. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, showing various ways of behavior, cannot be understood by the wisdom of ordinary people, and even a little anger or contempt will cause them to be born in hell for kalpas. All beings have the Tathagatagarbha, and they will surely become Buddhas in the end. One should be happy and hopeful for all beings. If one thinks that one is good and despises others, that will destroy oneself in this life, and one will be born in the preta realm in the next life, and even if one is reborn as a human being, one will become a slave. Those who are good at observing the faults of others do not know their own faults at all. Observing the faults of others is also one's own fault. When one's own continuum is capable, faults will also appear as virtues. No matter how great the faults of others may be, they will not harm oneself. One's own faults will destroy oneself. Therefore, at all times, one should observe one's own faults and not seek the faults of others. Generally speaking, it is also difficult to distinguish between faults and virtues. For the huge accumulation of faults, the ignorant will regard it as wonderful. Those with bad fate and arrogance will also regard virtues as faults. If one criticizes the faults of a superior person, one will drive away one's own merit with a broom. Faith is the mother of the Buddhadharma, and it is the land that produces all virtues. One should seek faith and reverence. One should visit the Jataka tales of the Tathagata Buddha and the biographies of predecessors without discrimination. From this, the initial faith arises. One should always think about the karmic results of good and evil and the benefits of the Buddhadharma. From trust and the arising of these, the faith of wanting Bodhi will arise. From faith, longing will arise, and because of longing, one will seek the Dharma. The Buddha's teachings have no partiality, and distinguishing sects is a foolish act. All Tibetan Buddhist traditions are the individuals of each lineage, and their source is the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. All sects have the path to enlightenment, and they all have the footprints of teaching and practice. Seeing good and bad in anything is a sign that the mind is biased towards one side. Being in a fair position
