If many thoughts arise like waves, relax and release the thoughts, holding them with mindfulness. In this way, no matter how thoughts arise, they will become the support for the mind to abide, and the experience of shamatha-vipassana will arise effortlessly. Therefore, alternate between tightening and loosening. Keep mindfulness and awareness in their natural state. Abide in the state where appearances are uninterrupted, yet free from clinging and conceptualization of objects. Whenever thoughts arise, let them naturally dissolve with continuous mindfulness. By practicing in this way, even when the meditation experience fades or when rising from samadhi, let awareness be slow and relaxed. Become loose, appearances become dull, and if awareness is not intentionally directed towards objects, it will become confused and blank. If a state of clarity and non-conceptuality arises, then shamatha-vipassana has arisen. From that point on, the bliss of physical and mental pliancy will gradually arise. Therefore, practice until pliancy and unwavering shamatha become stable. Second, seeking vipassana: In such a state of samadhi, cut off the proliferation of thoughts. When the mind abides together, observe what the nature of that abiding is like. Does it exist or not exist? Is it a substance or non-substance? Shape, color, one or many, etc., examine and analyze well. Do not just look at examples or listen to others' words, but let the flowing thoughts dissolve into the abiding. The nature of abiding is appearance without inherent existence, clarity without grasping, and naked awareness that cannot be expressed while being experienced. When vipassana sees this, it is seeing the nature, so it should be introduced. Third, introducing union: Although the terms shamatha and vipassana are different, in reality, their essence is one, only distinguished from different perspectives. When the mind relaxes naturally, thoughts naturally subside and abide in a non-conceptual state, this is shamatha. Observing its nature, one finds that it cannot be described in words, nor can it be thought of with the mind, nor can it be analyzed with wisdom, nor can it be expressed in language. Although there is no grasping, the clear and unobstructed awareness is clear, awake, and naked. Although there is no seeing, there is a potential to see; although there is no experience, there is a potential to experience. Although there is only one, it cannot be said what it is, this is vipassana. Because the essence of these two is inseparable, one must recognize the nature of the mind for oneself.

To leave the nature of the mind uncorrected is the union of calm and insight. In short, the mind without grasping is emptiness, the nature of the mind; though absent, whatever arises is clarity, the characteristic of the mind. The naked awareness of emptiness and clarity inseparable is the essence of the uncorrected mind, the heart of the Buddha, the mind of sentient beings. The reality of existence and non-existence does not go beyond this, so it is called the Great Seal of innate wisdom. Such a state has been naturally inherent from the beginning, but is obscured by conceptualization and not recognized, so it wanders in samsara. Now, with the guru's instructions, suppress conceptualization with the stillness of calm abiding, and seek the essence of the mind with insight. The union of calm and insight, recognizing awareness in an instant, combines inseparably with that naturally inherent state, so it is called the Great Seal of innate union instruction. Third, the aftermath: Having recognized this, in all activities, diligently practice the yoga of the river-like flow of calm and insight union meditation, and experience and realization will grow like summer sprouts. The more experience and realization grow in the continuum, the less the afflictions, renunciation arises effortlessly, compassion expands impartially, devotion blazes uncontrollably, and knowing emptiness as cause and effect, and cause and effect as interdependence, all obstacles and errors are naturally liberated. The two benefits of self and others are naturally accomplished. In detail, according to the stages of one's own experience, report to the venerable guru who is distinguished by experience and realization, and he will also guide with instructions for recognition, removing obstacles, and enhancement, and based on this, diligently strive with one-pointedness, and based on this, the qualities of the grounds and paths will be completely perfected. Adorned with the experience of accomplished ones from the wise, endowed with the lineage of practice blessings, with the virtuous deeds condensed from the essence of the instructions, may all beings pervading space attain supreme wisdom! This is the profound and clear Great Seal of the omniscient Butonpa's tradition, and the union-born guidance sequence, the writings of the omniscient Undefeated Protector, and the oral instructions of the venerable guru.
