Is it an appearance or a non-appearance? Is it awareness or non-awareness? Is there a self or is there no self? One should examine and analyze in this way. At that time, the essence of mind is emptiness, like the sky, and its nature is clear light. Awareness is unimpeded, and whatever appears, this appearance is equal in taste without arising, equal in taste without abiding, and equal in taste without ceasing. The three, clarity, awareness, and emptiness, are inseparable from appearance and emptiness. If one sees the meaning like the sky, which transcends the intellect, that is Suchness. Thus, all the qualities of the ground, path, and fruition are fully introduced. Second, one should simultaneously cultivate the higher seeing of the path, which is that the nature of mind is free from the extremes of arising, ceasing, and abiding, free from grasping at self and what belongs to self, free from the apprehended and the apprehender of characteristics, without object of sight or seer, its essence is emptiness and its nature is clear, the unobstructed awareness of appearance is clearly manifest in the absence of objects, and appearance is uncontaminated by fabrication, so it is clear. Knowing one's own face by oneself, it is distinct. Uncontaminated by conceptual grasping, it is naked. Unfabricated awareness is ordinary wisdom. Because conceptual thoughts do not enter the continuum, it is called 'Soma'. The essence of higher seeing should be introduced as the actual basis for cultivation. Third, one should cultivate the ultimate union of quiescence and higher seeing as the result. That is, abiding the mind in the guru yoga with devotion is quiescence, and seeing the essence as emptiness and without inherent existence is higher seeing. Abiding the mind in the visualization of the generation stage, like a reflection of the moon in water, is quiescence, and seeing the essence as emptiness, free from the three, arising, ceasing, and abiding, is higher seeing. Abiding the mind in the object of loving-kindness and compassion that pervades all sentient beings is quiescence, and abiding the mind in the emptiness of self-nature is higher seeing. Abiding the mind in the accumulation of skillful means and merit, like illusion, is quiescence, and seeing those as empty of inherent nature is higher seeing. All appearances, abiding the mind in the self-image of the mind, like a reflection of the moon in water, is quiescence, and seeing those as naked and unarisen, like a reflection of the moon in water, is higher seeing. Abiding the mind in the clear light of the nature of mind is quiescence, and seeing the essence as free from elaboration, clear-empty, and unarisen is higher seeing. Awareness free from fabrication, Soma.

The mind abiding is quiescence (śamatha), seeing selflessness, awareness, and emptiness as inseparable is insight (vipaśyanā). In short, like a moon in water, a reflection in a mirror, or an echo in the rocks, there is no emptiness other than appearance, and no appearance other than emptiness. Realizing appearance and emptiness as inseparable, like a rainbow appearing in the sky, abide in that state, and when all dualistic grasping is cleared away, the expansion of self-awareness and wisdom is known as Buddhahood. It is also called union (yuganaddha), which is the ultimate meaning. These are insights. Third, the instruction on transference of consciousness at the time of death has two aspects: first, training, and second, applying it in practice. The first is to train by contemplating one's own body as empty. In the center of the body, visualize the central channel (uma), white on the outside and red on the inside, hollow like a bamboo tube, with the lower end blocked by the syllable The upper end is like the aperture of Brahma, clear like an open window. Above the crown of the head, about an arm's length away in the sky, visualize the pure Buddha-field, the complete arrangement of the Sukhavati realm. In the center, on a precious lotus throne, your root guru, Amitabha, abides in the Sambhogakaya form, surrounded by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions. Visualize it as clearly as the moon rising in a clear lake. Then, contemplate the essence of your own mind as two drops, red and white, below the navel. Visualize the white drop circling the red drop three times, and then, like a shooting star, it shoots out from the crown of your head, touching the heart of Amitabha. At that moment, utter the syllable Then, say the syllable (藏文:ཀ,梵文天城体:क,梵文罗马拟音:ka,汉语字面意思:ka), and it descends back, circling the red drop three times, and then again utter the syllable (藏文:ཧིཀ,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:hik), visualizing it rising as before. Practice going up and down in this way, counting each round as one, doing one hundred and eight times, one thousand and eight times, etc., until you become proficient. The second is, when the signs of death appear, abandon all attachment and clinging, and without distraction, with loving-kindness and compassion as the basis, clearly visualize the guru above your head. Clearly visualize the channel in the center of your body, and visualize the two drops, red and white, merging into one. Utter the syllable (藏文:ཧིཀ,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:hik), and with the force of breath and mind, direct your consciousness intensely to the crown of your head, like shooting a star. Until you have transferred your consciousness to the heart of Amitabha, practice single-pointedly again and again.
