Is the appearance of external phenomena arising from the mind, or is the mind arising from the appearance of external phenomena? Investigate this. Furthermore, examine and scrutinize the mind of the investigator with the mind itself. Is that mind itself existent? Or is it nonexistent? Is it clear? Or is it unclear? Is it blissful? Or is it painful? Is it permanent? Or is it impermanent? Is it apparent? Or is it unapparent? Is it awareness? Or is it unawareness? Is it self-existent? Or is it selfless? Investigate and scrutinize in this way. At that time, the essence of the mind, being free from the three characteristics of arising, abiding, and ceasing, its essence being emptiness by its very nature, like the sky, while its essence is naturally luminous. Awareness is unceasing and constantly arising, and all these appearances are equally unified in being unborn, equally unified in being without abiding, and equally unified in being without cessation. Through investigation and scrutiny, if one sees the meaning of the four indivisible qualities of clarity, awareness, appearance, and emptiness, which transcends the intellect and is like the sky, that is the very reality. One should recognize that all the qualities of the ground, path, and fruition are fully present in the realization of the nature of mind. Secondly, the superior seeing of the essence, the ordinary, fresh awareness, should be practiced all at once: The very nature of mind is free from the extremes of arising, ceasing, and abiding. Blissful, clear, and non-conceptual, like the sky. Liberated from the duality of grasping and being grasped, which is the clinging to self and other. Its essence is emptiness, its nature is clarity, and its aspect is unceasing awareness, appearing vividly without an object. Transcending the object of grasping, which is the perceived and the perceiver. The fixation on the characteristics of the object of meditation and the meditator is extinguished. Not thinking about anything, therefore free from mental engagement. Not fabricating it, therefore relaxed. Free from all effort, therefore effortless. Whatever arises is free from identification, therefore without grasping. The awareness of meditative equipoise is free from artificiality, therefore it is open. Without characteristics, therefore empty and clear. Naturally luminous, therefore bright. Unstained by the duality of conceptual thought, therefore naked. Knowing oneself by oneself, therefore awake. Leaving awareness uncorrected, abiding in its own way, therefore it is ordinary awareness. Not indulging in a continuous stream of conceptual thoughts, therefore it is called fresh awareness. Free from the grasping of object and subject, appearances and mind are undifferentiated and clear, openly released without grasping. This awareness that knows itself and sees itself is the practice of superior seeing.

It is the actual thing taken on the ground. This is how it should be introduced. Third, the ultimate vipashyana, the union of calm abiding and insight, should be practiced: The nature of mind is free from the three—arising, abiding, and ceasing. To rest in a state of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, like the sky, is calm abiding. To see and know its nature is insight. Furthermore, the nature of mind is free from the two extremes, which is the union of calm abiding and insight of reality. Because the nature of mind is unborn, it is free from the extreme of permanence. Because it is unceasing, it is free from the extreme of annihilation. Abiding in its own nature of emptiness, it is free from the extreme of permanence. Knowing and clearly seeing various things, it is free from the extreme of annihilation. Because the essence of mind is not established as color or shape, it is free from the extreme of permanence. Because various activities arise spontaneously, it is free from the extreme of annihilation. It transcends permanence, annihilation, and conceptualization. The way to practice the indivisible union of clarity, awareness, and emptiness: To rest the mind on the accumulation of skillful means and merit, which is like an illusion, is calm abiding. To see that they are without inherent existence and are emptiness is insight. To rest the mind on devotion to the guru yoga is calm abiding. To see its essence as emptiness, free from the three—arising, ceasing, and abiding—is insight. To rest the mind on the object of loving-kindness and compassion that pervades all sentient beings is calm abiding. To see its nature as emptiness is insight. To rest the mind on the great bliss that is the ultimate path is calm abiding. To see that it is without attachment and is emptiness is insight. To rest the mind on all appearances as the mind's delusion, like a city in a dream, and to see that they are interdependent and unborn is insight. To rest the mind in the naturally luminous nature of mind and to see its essence as free from elaboration, clear-empty, and unborn is insight. To rest the mind on pristine awareness, free from artificiality and corruption, and to see it as selfless, aware-empty, and without an object is insight. In short, like a water moon, a reflection in a mirror, and an echo, emptiness is not different from appearance, and appearance is not different from emptiness. Having realized that appearance and emptiness are indivisible, like a rainbow appearing in the sky, and abiding in that state, all dualistic fixations are dispelled. It is also said that buddhahood arises from the expansion of self-awareness and wisdom. Vajrapani.
