Therefore, it is important to meditate with focused effort. This will cause clear wisdom to arise naturally. After that, thoughts will arise suddenly and alternate in this way. The sensations of the body and speech become more gentle and comfortable than before, which is called the experience of "habituation." For example, like the behavior of an old person, and the offering of a pond or frog at the foot of a mountain. The fourth is: by continuing to prolong the meditation, thoughts will arise one after another, or two or three in succession, suddenly. Mostly, it will abide peacefully and relaxedly, clearly and brightly. The sensations of the body are mostly comfortable. The breath is also mostly gentle and comfortable. Sometimes, the touch and sound of the breath in the nostrils are so clear that one feels annoyed and does not want the mind to abide. Sometimes, thoughts seem to be flowing, but they cannot be identified, and they simply abide naturally. Sometimes, even if you let go of the mind, it does not leave. This is called the experience of "reliance." For example, like putting a turtle in a bowl, or a small lake stirred by hail, or pouring water into an iron pipe. The fifth is: by continuing to meditate diligently, the sensations of the body and speech become more comfortable than before, and one does not even feel the existence of the body. One does not feel the flow of breath, and even if one feels it, one abides in equanimity without pleasure or pain, and the mind is not distracted. Some people, if they examine, will know, and if they do not examine, they will not know. The mind peacefully merges into one-pointedness. If you want the mind to abide, it abides; if you let it go, it leaves; when needed, it will come and gain autonomy. Unless external disturbances such as loud sounds occur, or it is awakened by inner effort, one can complete each session, which is called the experience of "completion." For example, like a king ruling his subjects, or like a great mountain, or like a great ocean without waves. In this way, through wavering, attainment, habituation, reliance, and completion, this is how the path of meditation arises. So it is said. Furthermore, these five ways of experiencing arising are successively called: the experience of thought recognition, the experience of rest, the experience of fatigue, the experience of having waves, and the experience of being without waves. If the fifth experience abides on the ten signs of luminosity and gains stability, even strong disturbances will not cause the meditation to be interrupted, and it is said that one can unite the fruit with luminosity. Sometimes, there will be times when the mind is not clear and clarity cannot be obtained, that is

Distraction and scattering of calm abiding are faults. Later, sometimes one may cultivate them accidentally, and although there may be instances of faultless non-conceptualization, for the time being, one must sharpen one's awareness and practice. In between these, distractions of sensual pleasures, remembering what one has done before is non-compliance, wanting to do later is desire for sensual pleasures, even for subtle faults, regret arises, and many doubts of indecision arise in both Dharma and activities. When one abides in meditation and awareness becomes dull, any of these will repeatedly appear in the mind, thereby harming the mind. Later, sometimes one may cultivate them accidentally, and although there may be instances of clear samadhi practice becoming a companion, it is best to abandon them intentionally for the time being. One should know that the objects of these are unreal like illusions, generate renunciation for distraction, generate joy for regret, and make a firm decision for doubt. These should be cultivated with increased strength in reverse order to eliminate them. These are necessary as appropriate during the initial gathering of the three withdrawals. The common aspects of the three withdrawals have been explained. Now, the experiences of the gradual withdrawal will be explained. The way the ten signs appear when the inner air and mind cease is as follows: From the aspect of wisdom, when the air merges into the central channel, it appears like smoke, like rolling, like sparks of fire like poison and desire, like the smoke of sandalwood, like swirling, like new rain clouds, and like fog spreading. The colors are various, such as yellow, white, red, black, green, blue, and mottled. The colors are the same, and there are various combinations such as two, three, four, and five. The size is uncertain, and the way of being stable, moving, and flowing is also uncertain. The experience of speech is that it is difficult to emit air, and the experience of the body is that one feels like the body is moving. One feels like the heart and other places are being pressed or squeezed by others. The experience of the mind is that it is drowsy and sleepy, and the experience of dreams is smoke, steam, dust, fog, etc., being pressed underground, sleeping in earthen caves and holes, etc. When the water air merges into the central channel, it appears like shimmering mirages, like flowing rivers, like rain blown by the wind.
