Those who desire to learn, but due to short lifespan and lack of diligence, cannot comprehend the meaning of Prajna; even if taught like the Ornament for Clear Realization, it is difficult for the meaning to arise in their minds. Therefore, to enable them to understand the meaning of the Prajna Paramita with less effort, this treatise is composed. Being embraced by Manjushri, the Lion of Speech, one knows such means and possesses the blessing, thus being able to comprehend this meaning. Fourth, why is it named? There are many names based on meaning, metaphor, scripture quantity, individual, place, time, and activity, etc. This treatise is named based on meaning. The meaning to be expressed is the Prajna Paramita, and the treatise that expresses it is this one. Fifth, what meaning does the beginning and end indicate? It indicates three summarized meanings: the meaning of the beginning, the meaning of the treatise, and the meaning of the end. The initial meaning has three aspects: stating the name, paying homage, and vowing to explain. Stating the name: In Sanskrit, it is Arya Prajna Paramita Upadesha Nama. (Noble Instruction on the Perfection of Wisdom). Explaining it, surpassing the realms of the three worlds, obtaining clarity in the Dharmadhatu of one's own self-aware wisdom is the wisdom that realizes ultimate truth, which is Prajna. Not falling into the extremes of existence and non-existence on the path of the union of emptiness and compassion is Paramita. Easily practiced and beneficial in a short time is Upadesha. The name of this treatise is Nama. Incidentally, the translator's homage is: Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. That is, accumulating merit towards the supreme mother, Prajna Paramita, so that the desired meaning is accomplished as wished. Second, paying homage: With the sun and moon of realization, destroying ignorance and wrong views; With the moisture of compassion, ripening all beings; To the Lion of Speech who has perfected the two benefits, I bow with body, speech, mind, and faith. Why pay homage? Because one wishes to compose this treatise. To whom do we bow? We bow to the Dharmakaya, which is uncreated and spontaneously accomplished, residing in one's own mindstream. The light of self-aware wisdom.

The realization is like the sun and moon, and through its power, it eliminates the habitual tendencies of ignorance, the obscurations of knowledge, and the afflictive obscurations of the perverted thoughts of complete imputation, perfecting the qualities of self-benefit. Like rain falling, bestowing the wonders of wisdom and the grace of compassion, causing plants to ripen. Possessing the qualities of benefiting others is Manjushri, the Lion of Speech. How to prostrate? Aroused by unfeigned faith, with body, speech, and mind, and with faith and understanding. Why prostrate? Because Manjushri is both the root guru and the yidam deity, prostrating to him, the two benefits are achieved effortlessly. Third is the vow to explain: The essence of what is to be said is free from the root, the meaning of non-dual wisdom, the perfection of wisdom, liberated from the extremes of clinging to permanence and annihilation, etc., and explained to benefit sentient beings as much as possible. Who explains? Arya Deva. What is explained? The twelve branches of the scriptures that express it, or the ultimate essence of the three precious collections of scriptures is the Perfection of Wisdom, which is free from the root of samsara, self-grasping, and reveals the meaning of the unborn nature of the illusion of dualistic grasping. How to explain? The words and meanings are not reversed, surpassing the object of the eight extremes of clinging, that is: Whatever arises dependently, has no cessation and no birth, is neither permanent nor impermanent, neither coming nor going, neither different nor the same in meaning, the pacification of all elaborations, is what the Buddhas say, I prostrate to that. And so on. Why explain? Starting from the first Bodhisattva, benefiting others as much as possible, so this is also for the benefit of sentient beings. Among them, the Perfection of Wisdom has three aspects: scripture, path, and fruit. The latter is the non-dual wisdom of the Buddha, which is the fruit to be achieved. Because that is the meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, the path that accomplishes it and the scripture that explains it are also expressed by the name of the Perfection of Wisdom. As the teacher Dignāga said: The Perfection of Wisdom and wisdom are not different, that wisdom is the Tathagata, it is the meaning to be accomplished.
