The lowest is one. For a novice, the best is three days, the middle is two, and the lowest is one day. The fourth is the method of empowerment: For a monastic, it is called "single," meaning that until the lower path is completed, one should not be allowed to practice the upper path, but should practice sequentially until completion. For a householder, it is called "gathering," meaning that in a month or so, whenever there is free time, one should complete all five paths, and then whenever there is free time later, one should repeat the previous one until the work is completed. For a novice, it is called "mixed," meaning that in one session of one day, each of the five paths is completed, and empowerment is given. In this way, all three types of people will not violate their previous vows and will eventually be completed. As the righteous one, Deva's Armor, said: "By measuring asceticism, dividing it into three stages, the practitioner will not fall into corruption. Give the blessing of identifying defilements and guarding vows." This is what was taught. The third is the yoga of the fruit of non-action: This also perfects the benefit of oneself and others, and includes the activities of the four bodies. The best can be obtained in this life, the middle in the dying bardo, and the lowest will not be delayed beyond the bardo. This can also be divided into: those who attain it through essence will do so in this life; those who attain it through signs will do so at the time of death; those who attain it through numbers will surely achieve it in the bardo. Those who attain it through merit will do so through many lifetimes. The lama previously wrote mainly about the ripening path of empowerment, but saw some who were ignorant and did not know how to enter the path of liberation, yet still practiced. Therefore, in order to be of some benefit, this guide was written. In these hundred paths, if the glorious Dharma protectors and dakinis are displeased, please forgive me and accept me. By the virtue arising from this well-spoken teaching, may all sentient beings filling the sky completely pacify the suffering of the three sufferings, eliminate the changing of the three appearances, obtain the glory of the infinite three liberations, and be completely liberated from all obscurations. May we abide in equality like the sky, and may the two benefits be spontaneously accomplished! This is called "The Quintessence of the Five Paths Guide - Immaculate Light," written by the Vajra-holder yogi José Sonam Pal. May this writing become a boat and vessel to ferry beings across the ocean of suffering!

May it become the ladder to traverse the path of liberation without error! May it become the lamp to illuminate the Buddha's intention! May it become the pillar to erect the victory banner of the practice lineage's teachings! May it become the wish-fulfilling jewel that brings forth all needs and desires! This is what Nyedo Pa Thamsed Khyenpa Sonam Pal, the one whose lotus feet rest comfortably on the crown of scholars and accomplished ones, composed as a remarkable and excellent explanation. Seeing this, in order to make all non-sectarian teachings appear pure and to fully open the lotus of wisdom, the Shakya monk, Vajradhara Manjushri, added new verses above and below and added banners. May this virtuous act of transmitting the teachings cause this excellent path of accomplishment to live and remain for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, and may all sentient beings' unimaginable suffering be pacified in the Dharmadhatu! Sarva da kalyanam bhavatu! Sanskrit Romanization: sarvadā kalyāṇaṃ bhavatu, Literal Chinese meaning: May all times be auspicious!) Thirteenth volume of the "Treasury of Pith Instructions," the sacred Dharma transmitted from the great accomplished Dampa Sangye, the guiding text on the five paths for pacifying suffering, "Immaculate Light, the Supreme Oral Instructions of the Accomplished Ones."
