The Twelfth Volume of the Instructions Treasury: The Teaching Manual of the Profound Dharma of the Glorious Shangpa Kagyu, the Integrated Practice of the Four Deities, called "Radiant Light of Wisdom." The Twelfth Volume of the Instructions Treasury. The Teaching Manual of the Profound Dharma of the Glorious Shangpa Kagyu, the Integrated Practice of the Four Deities, "Radiant Light of Wisdom." Herein lies the Teaching Manual of the Profound Dharma of the Glorious Shangpa Kagyu, the Integrated Practice of the Four Deities, called "Radiant Light of Wisdom." Namo Guru Caturdevaya. I prostrate to the Glorious Lama, the giver of supreme accomplishment, who dispels outer and inner obstacles, enhances qualities, and to the feet of the Four Deities of blessings. I will briefly clarify the order of their instructions. The great scholar-accomplisher, Kyungpo Naljorpa himself, supplicated the complete heart essence of one hundred and fifty Indian scholar-accomplishers, primarily the two forms of Wisdom Dakini, thus the great beings who uphold the Shangpa Kagyu lineage possess the complete teachings of sutra and tantra, vast as an ocean, and the instructions, and all have attained supreme accomplishment under their control. Nowadays, the main instructions that remain are known as four or five categories. Here, I will explain the order of the instructions for the integrated practice of the Four Deities, which is mainly related to the instructions of the great accomplished Ra hu la gup ta, who attained the deathless vidyadhara in southern India and ascended to the highest position, in two parts: Briefly mentioning the history of the lineage from which it originated, and elaborately explaining the actual order of instructions that arose from it. Firstly, the Four Deities appeared to the great accomplished Shavari Ishvara and spoke the means of accomplishment. The Lord Maitripa heard this and composed the means of accomplishment. It is clear that the scholar-accomplisher Kyungpo also heard this, hence it is said that the blessings of the Four Deities are inseparable, because the Protector's place of hearing is primary. However, the main source of this instruction is the great accomplished Ra hu la gup ta vajra. He was born into a royal family in a place called Elbisha in southern India, a land blessed by Vajra Dakini. Immediately after birth, he saw the Four Deities and was blessed. In his youth, the remaining karmic residue of previous lives ripened into a severe illness, causing him to develop renunciation and enter the Dharma, studying all the sutras and tantras with great expertise.

And relying on the instructions of Ratna Sāgara and others, common siddhis are easily accomplished. Eventually, having attained the Vidyādhara of Life Span and accomplished the supreme siddhi of Mahāmudrā, the accomplished gurus urged Khyenpo Naljor, the wise and accomplished one, to practice in seclusion in Jowo in Phenyul (འཕན་ཡུལ་འཇོག་པོ, present-day Linzhou County, Lhasa), and he came miraculously when the sun rose in India as a way of delivering the Dharma, arriving in Tibet before the sun rose. After staying for a long time, he bestowed many profound instructions such as White Mahākāla, Blue Mahākāla, and Wind Horse. In particular, he bestowed the cycle of instructions on the Four Deities with all its parts, and Khyenpo himself practiced them, so that the Four Deities appeared in person to the pure disciples, and great accomplishments were absorbed into practice. He bestowed this upon Mogchokpa and others, and the lineage of blessings and instructions has continued unbroken. I hold the treasury of all the secrets of the Vajrayāna, both common and uncommon, and am no different from the Great Vajradhara. Abiding in the sacred land, I prayed to the great being Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, who transcends ordinary people, and he gladly bestowed his kindness. Mogchokpa Rinchen Tsondu heard the Four Deities directly speak the methods of accomplishment, and it is said that in some lineages the Ḍākinīs bestowed the siddhi of bliss and emptiness, so these special close lineages are also included here. It is said that there are two types of practice for these Four Deities, individual and combined, and the one to be explained here is the combined practice of the Four Deities. Second, there are three parts to explaining the actual instructions of the lineage: preliminary practices, main practice, and subsequent stages. First, there are two parts: the preliminary practice for a session is to sit comfortably, adjust the body posture in a common way, expel impure air, and maintain mindfulness. There are also two parts to the preliminary practice of the instructions: taking refuge and generating bodhicitta. The first is: in the space in front, on a lion throne, lotus, sun, and moon seat, the root guru, who is the embodiment of all the refuges, abides in the form of the Great Vajradhara. I and all other beings equal to space combine our three doors into one, and from now until we attain enlightenment, the focus of our minds is on taking refuge.
